The Museum of Nebraska Art sponsors "MONA on the Gogh," a trip to see the works of Vincent Van Gogh in Denver, Colorado, October 20-October 22, 2012.

Join the Museum of Nebraska Art October 20 through October 22, 2012 as we experience a rare opportunity to see the Van Gogh exhibition at the Denver Art Museum, the only venue for this exhibition, with a special guided tour on opening day. We will also visit the newest addition to the Cultural Arts District, the Clyfford Still Museum. In addition to these two outstanding museum tours, we will see the Broadway musical sensation, “Memphis,” at the Denver Performing Arts Center.

While we are in Denver, we will be staying two nights at the beautiful Sheraton Hotel which is conveniently located in the center of downtown on 16th Street. This pedestrian promenade is lined with outdoor cafes, shops, restaurants, and retail stores as well as numerous fountains and plazas. Free shuttle buses cruise the mile-long mall.

We will kick off our trip on Saturday, October 20, by enjoying Broadway’s smash hit and winner of four Tony awards, the musical “Memphis.” It’s a story about a young white DJ who falls in love with a black singer and rock and roll. It takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated ‘50s and it prompted a revolution that changed music forever.

The next day we will experience the opportunity to have a guided tour that will give us an in-depth exploration of Vincent van Gogh’s unconventional journey to becoming one of the world’s most famous artists. The exhibition Becoming Van Gogh examines critical steps in his artistic evolution through more than 70 of his paintings and drawings, along with works by artists to whom he responded. Becoming Van Gogh consists of loans from more than 60 public and private collections throughout Europe and North America. Denver is the only venue for this exhibition.

After a delicious lunch at “Palettes,” one of Denver’s highest rated restaurants, we will have a guided tour of the Clyfford Still Museum which opened in 2011. This museum is the only one in the country to house the artist’s collection of approximately 2,400 works created between 1920 and 1980. Clyfford Still was a leader in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists and is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century.

Our trip would not be complete without taking advantage of the great shopping and dining opportunities. There will be time to individually roam the hip promenade and explore the unique shops, retail stores, cafes, and restaurants. On Monday, October 22, we will make a stop at the upscale Cherry Creek Shopping Center for one last shopping excursion on our way home.
