Exhibition from Jay Mosher and Rory
Middleton views
Alberta’s
Badlands through a new lens
Calgary – Deep in
Horse Shoe Canyon, a circular
pane of glass, fifty-eight-and-a-half inches in diameter,
creates a window onto
a landscape altered only by time and nature. Between September 6
and October 6,
however, interested viewers need only to step inside The New
Gallery to immerse
themselves in the powerful influences of Jay Mosher and Rory
Middleton’s
collaborative exhibition, titled Talisman.
From their site-specific installation,
Middleton and Mosher bring
film and still image documentation of Talisman
to urbanites searching for an ethereal shift from the city to
the Southern
Alberta prairies. Talisman’s
glass
pane is housed in a mechanical base and rotates half an inch per
second, almost
disappearing completely when seen from the perfect side view.
Middleton and
Mosher’s work transposes the natural landscapes reflected in and
seen through
the glass and steel framework to an alternative perception of
the very location
Talisman relies upon.
Talisman reflects the artists’ shared
interests in, and exploration of, the
interplay of landscapes with site-specific and installation
pieces, which has
marked their individual practices over the years. Middleton is a
Scottish-born
artist who has exhibited throughout Scotland and
internationally, often focusing
on the details of the specific environments he works in. Mosher
is a
Canadian-born artist who is currently studying in Scotland, and
has exhibited
his works across Canada and internationally.
