1) WHOOPING IT UP WITH WAYNE BARKER
MAIL & GUARDIAN: CHARLES LEONARD: The wild child of the local art scene enjoys his whisky and also works damned hard. Wayne Barker has been the epitome of sex, drugs and fine art since he burst on to the South African art scene in the 1980s. The late art polymath Alan Crump described him thus in the introduction to Charl Blignaut’s 2000 book Wayne Barker: Artist’s Monograph: “Wayne Barker has always had problems with authority both at the level of the individual and that of a system” and “superficially, Barker’s work often possesses a cavalier quality and his personality appears to be that of a cultural cowboy reminiscent of the young Robert Rauschenburg of the mid-1950s in North America”. 2) MCKAISER: NUDITY HAS LOST ITS POLITICAL POTENCY
MAIL & GUARDIAN: GENEVIEVE QUINTAL: The reaction to a new painting of President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed has been banal but in an interesting way, Eusebius McKaiser has said."It's quite a beautiful thing – nudity has lost its political potency," McKaiser said on Wednesday."In other words, people were shocked the first time because it went against their social norm, so when you see it again it can't have the same effect..Read Source here

3) GODFREY WEN 2DE ERNEST COLE-PRYS

1) TOURISTS LINE UP TO VISIT BEAST JESUS
HYPERALLERGIC: by Jillian Steinhauer on August 27, 2012 Not only does the internet love Cecilia Gimenez and her Beast Jesus restoration job — so do real life, flesh-and-blood people! Apparently hundreds of tourists have begun making pilgrimages to see the work and take pictures with it, after the apparently well-intentioned octogenarian Eskimo-fied Elías García Martínez’s 19th-century fresco of Jesus. According to the AFP, there’s also a petition circulating online to leave the painting in all its new folk-art glory, rather than have professionals attempt to repair and restore to its former state. 2) 'FAKING IT: MANIPULATED PHOTOGRAPHY BEFORE PHOTOSHOP' COMES TO METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

HUFFINGTON POST: Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990, ushering in a new age of tampering with photography. Yet the history of manipulated photos stretches back over a century before the dawn of Adobe's software. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will explore this widely uncharted narrative with "Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop," an exhibition comprised of 200 photographs taken between the 1840s and 1990s. Some photographs are manipulated to reach a higher form of truth, Read Source here
