ABOUT CPW'S 2012 VISION AWARD HONOREE:
This year CPW recognizes Willis E. Hartshorn, currently the Senior Deputy Director of the International Center of Photography (ICP) with the Vision Award for his out- standing dedication and service to the field of photography.
Since joining the staff of the International Center of Photography, in 1982, Willis E. Hartshorn, has been instrumental in the growth of this world-class museum and school. Like his predecessor and ICP's founder, Cornell Capa, Buzz has championed strong photojournalism and documentary work within ICP's productions, while also introducing contemporary work across all disciplines of the medium, ever attentive to the shifts and trends that photography continues to undergo today.
He has held numerous positions over his 30-year tenure with ICP, including Coordinator of Traveling Exhibitions, Director of Exhibitions, Deputy Director for Programs, and Executive Director from 1994 - 2012. With a leadership style that colleagues and friends have described as "strategic, inclusive, and wise", his time there has seen a period of unprecedented growth both for the institution and for the field. Notable achievements include the institutions move to their Midtown location, a massive growth in ICP's endowment, additional educational programs, new additions to the collection and a book department in collaboration with the renowned publisher Steidl.
