São Paulo Underground, Fielded, Head/Head and Softcheque

To Perform as Part of Storytelling Exhibit

Louisville, KY (September 4, 2012) - The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (KMAC), 715 W. Main Street, will host two musical performances as part of the exhibition Storytelling as Craft: Chapter One that opens on Friday, September 7.

On Tuesday, September 11 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, KMAC will host three bands Fielded, Head/Head and Softcheque. Admission is $5 or free for museum members. Lindsay Powell of Fielded uses vocals and minimal instrumentation to explore the many moods that can be created... through experimentation with voice as leader rather than follower of the amplified instrument. Nicole Ginelli composes the gospel sci-fi group from San Francisco known as Head/Head. Softcheque (featuring Dane Waters, Arsenio Zignoto (aka Alan) and Warren Christopher Gray) is a three-piece band from Louisville that creates a mysterious blend of music, reminiscent of avant-garde composers and the '80s keyboard revolution.

On Thursday, September 13 at 8:00pm, São Paulo Underground will perform. Admission is $10, or $8 for museum members, and $5 for students with ID. São Paulo Underground consists of Rob Mazurek, Guilherme Granado and Maurico Takara, and embodies a fascinating musical mixture of Sun Ra-esque cosmic noise and rhythms and phrasing from samba, maracatu, rock and free jazz traditions. Rolling Stone says their music is "Limitless in its possibilities," and The Wire describes them as "Post digital, post industrial psychedelia."

Storytelling as Craft: Chapter One features art works that use narrative and narrative structures as the primary medium in an exhibit that questions the premise of craft as a physical object. Through the presentation of tangible art alongside works that use various other strategies-namely, the spoken word and pictorial fields, the museum explores the large range of works derived from storytelling. Works in photography, installation, quilting, sculpture and sound illuminate the ways that language can inform a wide range of approaches to art making and explore a juxtaposition of folk, craft, and contemporary arts, as well as performance arts.

Participating artists in Storytelling as Craft: Chapter One include Mindy Shapero, Ellie Ga, Frank X Walker (Affrilachian Poets), Kentucky Cane carvers Elisha Baker and Denzil GoodPaster, Theaster Gates, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Arturo Alonzo Sandoval, Rebekka Seigel, Cindy Sherman, Edgar Tolson, and Tris Vonna-Michell.

KMAC collaborated with the following organizations on the exhibit: the Kentucky Arts Council, the Fund For the Arts, the Brown-Forman Corporation, the National Endowment of the Arts, WPFL -The Moth, The Huntington Museum of Art, The Photographic Archives of University of Louisville, Louisville Classical Academy, Kentucky Historical Society, The University of Kentucky, Marianne Boesky Gallery, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Tara Anderson, Rick Bell, Michael Hall and Pat Glascock, and Shelly Ward.

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft is open Tuesday through Friday, 10:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 11:00am to 5:00pm, and closed on Mondays.
