New Exhibitions and Membership Benefits!

"Foiled: Tinsel Painting in America" and "Ooh, Shiny!" open September 13.

.
Last month began with a great review in the New York Times of our exhibition Compass: Folk Art in Four Directions, currently on display at the South Street Seaport Museum in collaboration with the Museum of the City of New York. In that review, Roberta Smith characterized Compass as an "exuberant and wide-ranging" exhibition that reveals the "Museum's collection to be one of New York City's great treasures."

This month, members of the museum are invited to join us on September 13 for the opening reception of two new exhibitions, Foiled: Tinsel Painting in America and Ooh, Shiny! Not a member? Click here to join today and become a part of this festive exhibition opening reception. Foiled: Tinsel Painting in America is the most comprehensive museum exhibition to focus on this under-recognized decorative art that was widely practiced in America from 1850 to 1890. One of the great revelations of the exhibition is the way this modest technique touched upon so many aspects of American life, innovation, and culture. The museum holds a wealth of tinsel paintings thanks to the prescience of donors Kristina Barbara Johnson and Jean and Day Krolik Jr. With the significant gift from the collection of Susan and Laurence Lerner, the museum is now the largest public repository of this fascinating artform.

An attraction to shiny things is a primal human impulse. It may be instinctive and emotional, or profoundly meaningful within a cultural context. In the visual arts this has been expressed through the use of myriad materials that glitter and reflect. Ooh, Shiny! will highlight three centuries of artworks—ranging from needleworks by 18th-century schoolgirls to sculptures by contemporary icons including Howard Finster—that are embellished with such materials as spangles, mica flakes, glass, marble dust, sequins, glitter, and aluminum.
Compass: Folk Art in Four Directions—at the South Street Seaport Museum
Wednesday, September 12 - 1:00 pm

Speaker: American Folk Art Museum gallery guide
Location:
South Street Seaport Museum
12 Fulton Street (between Water & South Streets), New York City

New York City has a rich history largely tied to its thriving harbor activities and developing urban environment. The American Folk Art Museum responds to this context with a lively sampling of artworks from the collection that speak to both the romanticism and gritty realism of the seaport district. Four themes instigate a visual dialogue about moments in the life of Schermerhorn Row and the seaport: exploration; social networking; shopping; and wind, water, and weather.

Quilts of Conscience
Sunday, September 16 - 1–2 pm

The 30 foot-long National Tribute Quilt is a monumental response to the events of September 11 spearheaded by the Steel Quilters of United States Steel Corporation. Incorporating 3,466 blocks from all fifty states and several international countries, it has been on continuous view at the American Folk Art Museum since 2002.

Lee Kogan will discuss the powerful and poignant quilt within the context of America's long tradition of quilts of conscience, quilts that have been created to express the quiltmaker's views on pressing political, social, and environmental issues.

Supported in part by The City Quilter.

Please note: a facsimile of the National Tribute Quilt will be on view for this program, as the quilt will be on view at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Boca Raton, Florida, as part of the American Folk Art Museum traveling exhibition Politics NOT as Usual: Quilts with Something to Say.

Reading: Underwater New York—at the South Street Seaport Museum
Thursday, September 20-  7:30–8:30 pm

Speakers: Nicki Pombier Berger, founding editor, Underwater New York, and novelists Myla Goldberg and Jenny Offill
Location:
South Street Seaport Museum
12 Fulton Street (between Water & South Streets), New York City

Artists and storytellers have long drawn inspiration from the cityscape, but underneath the water's surface is another landscape entirely, ranging from the whimsical (a giraffe skeleton, a fleet of ice cream trucks) to the historical (the steamship Princess Anne, the remnants of Coney Island’s Dreamland). Underwater New York, a digital journal of writing, art, and music inspired by real-life objects found in the waterways of New York City, hosts an evening of original stories written for the occasion by some of today's most compelling authors as well as its founding editor, Nicki Pombier Berger.
