Landscape Dreams, A New Mexico Portrait

Photographs by Craig Varjabedian

at Afterimage Photograph Gallery, Dallas

September 22 to October 31, 2012

Opening reception & Book signing Saturdat October 6, 7:30-9:30pm

The Afterimage Photography Gallery is pleased to present the debut of the Landscape Dreams, A New Mexico Portrait exhibition of photographs by Craig Varjabedian. Varjabedian’s photographs, made over the nearly three decades that he has lived and worked in New Mexico, range over all the image-making forms—landscape, portrait, and still life— to offer a remarkably complete, varied, and original portrait of New Mexico. White sand desert, cloud-capped peaks, ancient adobe ruins, groves of autumn cottonwoods all find their place here. Intimate, personal, and yet iconic, the photographs capture a land and its people in a collection that is diverse and offers a captivating unique portrait of New Mexico.

Fittingly, the photographs celebrate the hundred years of New Mexico’s statehood begun in 1912. Here, paired with images of Native American sites that go back to earlier millennia, such as the ruins at Bandelier National Monument, are artifacts of the modern world, like the familiar outline of a pump jack in an oil patch and a low-rider Cadillac outside the wall that protects the Santuario de Chimayo.

The photographer will attend an opening reception and book signing on Saturday October 6th from 7:30-9:30pm. This will be the national debut of the companion book by the University of New Mexico Press. The ninety photographs, all beautifully presented as elegant duotone reproductions in a hard cover coffee table book, celebrate Varjabedian’s long time affair of the heart with New Mexico. As Hampton Sides, the New York Times best-selling author, writes in the book’s foreword “Take time to savor this careful distillation of the real New Mexico.” Please visit www.landscapedreamsbook.com or www.facebook.com/LandscapeDreamsBook for more information about the book or http://vimeo.com/45003312 to view the book trailer.

The Afterimage Photograph Gallery is located in The Quadrangle #141 2800 Routh Street, Dallas, Texas, 75201. 214.871.9140.  Hours are 10 - 5:30 pm Monday - Saturday. www.afterimagegallery.com or www.craigvarjabedian.com
