Established by visual artist Elisabeth Ramfjord in 1998, Galleri Ramfjord now ranks among the most dynamic and engaging exhibition venues in Oslo. To mark its 14th anniversary this summer, the gallery hosted an open call for a juried exhibit to be shown on both sides of the pond.

Out of more than 500 submissions, the wide-ranging jury – comprised of Lars Elton (art critic), Steinar Christensen (visual artist and Professor of Fine Art) and Sol Kjøk (visual artist and Founding Artistic Director of NOoSPHERE) – made a selection of 15 artworks, ranging from painting, sculpture, photography, metalwork to collage. First shown at Galleri Ramfjord in Oslo August 25 through September 22, the winning entries by the following artists will be on display in New York City October 5-28:

Amina Bech, Kari Anne Helleberg Bahri, Henrik Uldalen, Kristin Von Hirsch, Jannecke Lønne Christiansen, Christina Disington, Erik Formoe, Espen Eiborg, Vered Gersztenkorn, Julia Valentina Ester Olaussen, Kathleen McIntyre, Jeanette Lafontine, Merete Løndal, Lillian Presthus, and Anne-Sofie Øgaard

From this select group, the jury’s top three choices were given travel awards to attend the opening reception:

Constantly on the go between countries, first place winner Amina Bech is a migrant artist without a permanent residence of her own. Her manipulated photograph from the series When You Said to Me I Was Dead in Acholi is the artist’s response to her stay in the war-torn region of Northern Uganda, site of “the world's worst forgotten humanitarian crisis”. Contributing to the rebuilding of the local community after the ravages wrought by Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army, Amina Bech founded Soft Power:a sustainable and self-sufficient knitting business that empowers women, creates jobs and builds skills in the area of art & design.

The shared second prize went to Kari Anne Helleberg Bahri, whose Body-Machine-Soul sculpture is a new take on the Dadaist tradition. Here, the bust – typically a locus for desire – becomes a support for imaginative devices for the wounded; a subtle riff on current ideals of perfection versus the strength in being different.

Henrik Uldalen, the other 2nd place winner who also earned the public vote, paints scenarios where a combination of realistic pictorial language and dreamy surrealism evokes a sense of unpredictability and ambivalence. The suspension of logic makes us wonder and stirs questions that we carry on with us.
