Hello, friends of Jack Straw-

Fall is here, and we're as busy as ever! We're moving full speed ahead on our usual smorgasbord of arts and educational programs, as you can see below.

2013 Artist Residency Applications are online! Read on below or head right to our web site to check out the programs and download your application.

Our 2012 Jack Straw Writers have been busy! Last week they read in Port Townsend, and next week they head east, to Walla Walla! In addition, we're pleased to partner with Richard Hugo House and SPLAB in presenting an event as part of 100 Thousand Poets for change, featuring many of our Writers Program alumni.

There's still room and time to sign up for our audio workshops! Just get in touch if you'd like to learn more about Pro Tools or field recording.

October's Composer Spotlight will be presented by composer and Jack Straw resident artist John Teske, who will discuss and share some of his compositions for bass.

Our series of Unexpected Arts performances at Seattle Center continues. Check out the schedule of the next week's worth of events below, subscribe to our Twitter feed for daily announcements, or just wander around the Center and see what you bump into!

If you're an artist who'd like to be a part of all this great stuff (plus our gallery!), make sure to apply for one of our artist residency programs by November 1st!

Read up on all this and more below. We hope to see you at an event soon!

John Teske

Composer Spotlight

JOHN TESKE

Fundamentals of My Authentic Musical Language

Wed, October 10, 7:30pm

Jack Straw Productions

4261 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, 98105

Seattle composer and Jack Straw resident artist John Teske will speak about his recent "five pieces for double bass" and their role in his development of an authentic compositional voice. Incorporating pieces of the past, present, and sketches of new works, John will highlight how the "five pieces" solidified the core ideas that have become part of his musical language.

John Teske is a composer, double bassist and improviser. John composes for acoustic instruments and expands the possibilities of sound through extended techniques and electroacoustic means. He received his BM in Music Composition from the University of Washington and studied with Joël-François Durand, Juan Pampin, and Josh Parmenter.

John's recent work has been exploring the nature of human consciousness, awareness, and sensation. As our culture becomes more interconnected, the experience of time seems to be accelerating and the average attention span is diminishing. By slowing the experience of time through music, he hopes to bring to attention greater subtleties of sound.

Jack Straw Productions and Washington Composers Forum present Composer Spotlight, a series of talks and performances by composers, musicians, and scholars of new and innovative music every second Wednesday of each month. For more information about Composer Spotlight artists and the series, .
