The truth is an egg with a very thin shell, and much the same might be said of portraiture once you crack the surface, hence the title of this three person show "Hearsay." All three painters are art school grads embracing disparate styles. Jemima Kirke is perhaps the most traditional of the bunch. She studied under Dike Blair at RISD and in her subjects we witness hints of Neel and Pearlstein and Kilimnik, but with an almost knee-jerk defiance in their gaze. Jeanette Hayes primarily deals with art relating to the internet and how our perception of past master works, or really art in general, is changed by the platform through which we experience it. In addition to the paintings shown here, such as her "Botticelli Photobooth" series, Hayes makes GIF art and has collaborated with Proenza Schouler and Opening Ceremony on recent commercial projects. Jay Miriam graduated last year from Carnegie Mellon with a BFA in painting and often approaches the figure with meticulous layering and an abstracted sexual undercurrent, stylistically very different than Cecily Brown, yet somehow feeling from a similar point of view. Looking around the gallery, the "Hearsay" show reminds us of an observation by Charles Baudelaire who remarked that strangeness is a necessary ingredient in beauty.
