Grand Cinema Film Festival at Tacoma Art Museum
Saturday & Sunday, October 6 & 7, 10 am–5 pm
The Tacoma Film Festival is an eight-day celebration of current independent film from around the globe that began in 2006. The primary focus of the festival is on art house, foreign language, documentaries, and numerous short films. Cost: $10 ($8 for seniors, Tacoma Art Museum members, or Grand Cinema members; $6 for students or Grand Cinema senior members). Museum admission not included.

Northwest Art, Northwest Influences: Lucinda Parker

In this lecture hear from the imaginative Lucinda Parker, featured in Best of the Northwest, as she shares her stories and insights about her work and relationships to other Northwest artists. Día de los Muertos Exhibition Installation
Sunday, October 21, 10 am–5 pm
Observe or participate as artist Fulgencio Lazo, with help from a team of professionals and volunteers, creates two large tapetes, or sand paintings, in the museum’s lobby, while community members install altars remembering loved ones and raising social awareness. Free with museum admission.
Ale ‘n’ Altars

Learn about the history and culture around Día de los Muertos as celebrated in Oaxaca, Mexico, and leave with your own personalized skeleton figurine, or calaca, honoring a beloved family member or pet. Toast the cycle of life and death with jovial libations at this fun and festive workshop. Cost: $45 ($35 for members) includes all supplies, light Mexican fare, and a beer sampler. Create a Día de los Muertos Bracelet with The Bead Factory

Practice your jewelry making skills at Tacoma Art Museum with staff from The Bead Factory to create a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) bracelet. Explore our collection of nearly 200 jewelry works, the tapete installation (sand painting), and community altars, and make your own Día de los Muertos inspired bracelet. Join us to celebrate the opening of Andy Warhol’s Flowers for Tacoma and create screen prints inspired by Warhol and other current exhibitions. Afterward, stay on to hear about Warhol’s design for the Tacoma Dome at 2 pm. Cost: $35 ($25 for members) covers one adult with or without child. Cost of admission for each additional child is $10. Día de los Muertos Free Community Festival

For the eighth consecutive year, join thousands of your friends and neighbors to celebrate Day of the Dead at Tacoma Art Museum with art-making, performances, and exhibitions of a tapete (sand painting) and community altars as we honor the cycle of life. Museum admission free.
Second City Concert Chamber Series: Zen Pathways

The beauty of Tacoma Art Museum and the work of esteemed photographer Michael Kenna form the backdrop for this program in partnership with the Second City Chamber Orchestra. Come “hear” Kenna’s photography as you explore the “Zen Pathways” of Japan, Russia, France, and the Northwest, expressed in music. Marie Watt: Lodge

Blankets, Stories, and Communities
Marie Watt is a nationally recognized mixed media artist whose work explores human stories and ritual implicit in everyday objects. The exhibition will feature a range of work from the past decade, including portrait blankets of Jim Thorpe, Ira Hays, Susan B. Anthony and Joseph Beuys. Work also includes stacked blanket sculptures and Engine, a felt cave-like structure that honors the act of storytelling and the storytellers in the artist's life. Organized by Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Willamette University.
Memories and Meditations: A Retrospective of Michael Kenna’s Photography
October 6, 2012 through March 24, 2013
The first U.S. retrospective of Michael Kenna’s photography in more than twenty years, Memories and Meditations will explore his ongoing investigations of special locations around the world. Born in Great Britain but now based in Seattle, Kenna frequently returns to certain locales in order to record them over the course of several years. His signature style evokes a sense of timelessness that underscores the intimate connections of history and geography. Kenna captures the innate beauty in locations as diverse as power plants in central England, the gardens of Versailles, abandoned factories in Detroit, and remote islands in Japan. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.
Best of the Northwest: Selected Paintings from the Collection
Through March 17, 2013
Best of the Northwest features highlights from the museum’s Northwest painting collection. Long-time favorites will join new arrivals in this snapshot exhibition of some of the museum’s best work by Northwest painters. Works range in age from the early 20th century through today and include a variety of painting media and styles. This exhibition was organized to coincide with publication of the museum’s handbook of the Northwest art collection which will be available late this fall. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.
Andy Warhol’s Flowers for Tacoma
November 3, 2012–February 10, 2013
Andy Warhol’s Flowers for Tacoma explores the context and development of flower imagery in Warhol’s career, focusing on his 1982 proposal for the Tacoma Dome. Warhol’s extensive use of flowers throughout his career will be represented by early illustrations from the 1950s, series of flower prints, and numerous photographs made by Warhol and his circle that illustrate the artist’s fascination with the fragility and beauty of flowers. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.
Chihuly: Gifts from the Artist
Open for extended exhibition
Tacoma Art Museum’s extensive permanent collection of artwork by world-renowned glass artist and Tacoma-native Dale Chihuly is in a gallery of its own. Tacoma boasts more installations of Chihuly’s artwork than any other city in the world. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.
