KENOSHA,
WI – To help commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the
Civil War, the Civil War Museum presents the Second Friday Lunchbox
Lecture Series. This free program is sponsored by the Milwaukee Civil
War Roundtable and the Iron Brigade Association. Participants are
encouraged to bring their own lunch to the hour long presentations
that begin at 12 p.m.
“Our
Only Hope Was to Fight Our Way Out” will be presented by James
Heinz on Friday, October 12. In October 1862, Wisconsin's William
Barker Cushing was aboard a Union gunboat caught in an ambush on
Virginia's Blackwater River. Mr. Heinz describes how Cushing and his
crew fought their way out in the only battle of the war in which
African Americans are known to have participated on both sides.
“The
Brothers' War” will be presented by Dave Oberg on Friday,
November 9. The program was developed in partnership with Grayslake
Historical Society volunteers, and includes stories and images of
Lake County residents who served during the Civil War.
“Investigating
the Battlefields” will be presented by Michael Kutzer on
Friday, December 14. Twenty years after the war, painters made
careful investigations of the battlegrounds to create the most
truthful depiction. Mr. Kutzer examines the authenticity of the
paintings.
The
Lunchbox Lecture Series is free and open to the public.
