Body Shop: New Multimedia Paintings
by
Maximilian Toth (Main Gallery)
October 3 - October 31, 2012

Opening Reception Saturday, October 6, 6-9 p.m.

in conjunction with Art for Art's Sake

GOLD CAR ROOF
Maximilian Toth, Gold Car Roof, 2012

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is proud to announce Body Shop, a multimedia installation of paintings, drawings and painted car parts by New Haven-based artist Maximilian Toth.  This will be Toth's inaugural solo exhibition at the gallery, and will open in conjunction with Art for Art's Sake, the annual opening of the art season in New Orleans, on Saturday, October 6th from 6-9pm.

This October, the Main Gallery will be transformed into a thematic installation, based around the artist's experience with, and materials from, his two year participation in the Broome County Demolition Derby in Upstate New York.

A demolition derby is a unique spectacle- a motorsport usually associated with state fairs and festivals, these are colorful, cacophonous affairs with a circuslike veneer overlaying a (sometimes violent) competitive drive.  For the past two years, Toth has driven his hand-painted cars in the Broome County derby, and has salvaged the banged-up remains, ironed out and clear-coated, painted in Toth's signature street-inspired style, the trunks, doors and roofs of his cars serve as living relics of this uniquely American sport.

To further bring the derby experience to life in the gallery, Toth will paint the gallery walls with decorations and proclamations taken from other drivers' cars... The effect will be immersive, and will transport visitors into an atmosphere full of hot colors, a heady pop and the satisfaction and chaos of a good crash.

Growing up my father would drag me to any state fair within a generous definition of "driving distance." As a human camera bag, I switched out the film as he made his way past tilt-o-whirls and fried dough stands, always ending up at the demolition derby. Engines roared, tires tore up mud, sending it into the back rows of the crowd. Cars fought for traction and aimed for each other. The metal twisted, turned over, caught fire, and crumpled. This continued until only one limping metal object, barely resembling an automobile, was the last able to move. It's a sport of indulgence for grown men, the dangerous equivalent of bumper cars. It's the embodiment of what happens when you allow the strength and experience of adults to engage in a game safer for weaker children, less capable of injuring themselves. -Maximilian Toth

Maximilian Toth was born in New Orleans, LA. He received a BFA from Art Center, Pasadena and an MFA from Yale in 2006. He has had solo shows in New York, Minneapolis and Australia as well as numerous group shows including the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art, Dallas Contemporary and Prospect New Orleans 1.5. He will be included in the upcoming Painters' Paint exhibition at the Saatchi gallery in London.

Immersing themselves in full throttle bacchanalia, Toth's line-based figures reenact contemporary versions of initiation rites long since abandoned. They play at war to test their strengths, galvanize loyalty and challenge faith. They seek danger to establish glory. However, within this search there is an inherent violence that reveals a primal nature. Ultimately, their urge to destroy becomes their vehicle to defy their limitations.

He has exhibited at Franklin Artworks, Minneapolis (solo), Wadsworth Athenaeum, Dallas Contemporary, Daniel Weinberg Gallery, and Jack Tilton Gallery. His work has been featured in Artforum, Art in America, The Art Object, Dossier Journal, The Star Tribune, V Magazine, Art & Auction, and The New York Sun.

Blessing in Da' Skies: New Paintings by Justin Forbes
(Middle Gallery)
October 1- October 31, 2012

Opening Reception Saturday, October 6, 6-9 p.m.

in conjunction with Art for Art's Sake

DOGTOWN
Justin Forbes, Dogtown, 2012

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is proud to announce Blessing in Da' Skies, a new series of paintings by celebrated artist Justin Forbes. This will be Forbes' third solo exhibition at the gallery, and will open in conjunction with Art for Art's Sake on Saturday, October 6th from 6-9pm.

Justin Forbes's unique painting style has been nationally lauded for its unique and accomplished blend of realism and exaggeration. Forbes masterfully captures group scenes; visually translating the various energies, frequencies and emotions that can co-exist in a shared space. He possesses the unique ability to tell multiple stories in a single canvas, simultaneously recording and amplifying scenes of American life. His palette is kaleidoscopic, candy-colored, AND tantalizing- luring the viewer into his illumination of reality, capturing the tempo of life with all its euphoria and loneliness, where deeper truths sometimes lie within distortions. Highly narrative and supersaturated in American lore, Forbes's paintings often convey journeys- whether it be a story of a cross-country road trip or simply an epic late night.

Blessing in Da' Skies continues Forbes's trademark intensity of color and scope, while possessing a quieter heft, derived from a point of contemplation in the artist's life. The eight canvases chronicle the artist's past lives, as seen through the lens of a new perspective. This reflective series is suffused with the artist's memories and experiences that range from his skateboarding days in California to his decade spent as an artist in New Orleans. While the series serves as a private meditation on the artist's past, present, and future (he calls it a "personal rebirth"), it also relates to a hopeful America that is, was and always will be on the edge of hip.

This body of work is meant as an unrelenting reminder of the innocence of hope juxtaposed by hints of consequence. Though throughout these naive, dark days I never abandoned beauty but chased after it. There were times when my priorities were askew and I burned both the candle and several bridges. With these paintings I long to tenderly comment on life's dedications and rewards, while living every waking moment like it is my last. -Justin Forbes

Justin Forbes's work has been exhibited in New York, San Francisco and New Orleans. His work has been featured in The Week, Oxford American, BBeyond Magazine, Juxtapoz Magazine, Our Louisiana Magazine, ART Papers, Tribe Magazine, Twisted South and the HBO series Treme. Forbes has also done illustrations for Hustler magazine. Forbes' paintings are in numerous public and private collections including the Michael Brown and Linda Green Collection, actress Sela Ward, actor Sam Neill, TV commercial producer T.G. Herrington, publishing magnate Larry Flynt, sports writer Gene Wojciechowski, Debora and Paul Lipman, and the permanent collection of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Never Records New Orleans:
a Multimedia Project by New York Artist/Musician
Ted Riederer

841 Carondolet Street

October 6- November 4

Opening Reception Saturday, October 6, 6-11 p.m.

in conjunction with Art for Art's Sake

Never records Storefront
Never Records Storefront, Liverpool

This October, musician/artist Ted Riederer will bring his critically acclaimed project, Never Records, to New Orleans. Never Records has travelled from New York City, to the Liverpool Biennial, to Lisbon, to Derry, Ireland, and to London where it was sponsored in part by the Tate Modern. Time Out London callled it, "the most exciting new outlet to open in years...."

Riederer will install Never Records in a vacant shop at 841 Carondelet St. in a space donated by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, October 6th - November 4th, 2012.

Never Records is a multi-media multi-artist project by New York artist/musician Ted Riederer. Exploring the potential of a ficticious record store and record label to unite, educate, and uplift a community through recorded sound, Riederer's project began in an abandoned Tower Records near Union Square in New York City. In January 2010, Riederer, in collaboration with curators No Longer Empty, created what the Wall Street Journal described as a "mock shop" that served as a "love letter to the dying concept of the record store."

Performers from any background and any skill level can sign up for recording sessions inside the art installation and leave with a freshly cut vinyl record of their performance.Visitors to the exhibition can view all of the unique artwork in the shop designed to mimick a long-operating record shop, listen to any of the recordings from all of the Never Record's installations on a turntable in the shop, and watch performances being recorded and cut live.

In an interview with the London radio station Resonance FM, Riederer
explained the goals of Never Records: "In a world of Facebook fatigue,
Never Records is an attempt to create an actual community as opposed to a
virtual one." According to Riederer, Never Records is also an attempt to
break down the barriers between museums and galleries, and the communities
that they often fail to serve.

Riederer aims to record at least 100 performances in New Orleans during the
month of October.  Never Records will also feature work from local visual artists alongside theartwork of national and international artists. Arturo Vega, the artist behindthe Ramones, will design a t-shirt that will be printed inside the shop.
Prospect founder, Dan Cameron will curate a series of performances
the weekend of October 26th.

Shaped Land Chalew
Hannah Chalew, Shaped Land, 2011

Asheville Art Museum
September 14, 2011- January 26, 2013

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is pleased to announce that the exhibition Art/Sewn, currently on view at Asheville Art Museum, features works by New Orleans artists Hannah Chalew and Gina Phillips.

Art/Sewn focuses on works of art in which sewing is integral to the making and viewing experience. The exhibition attempts to blur the distinction between art and craft that is relevant today as many fine artists adopt craft forms and techniques and craft artists produce non-functional works of art.  What the works featured in Art/Sewn share is sewing-sewing on woven fabric, paper, felts and skins, as well as the technique of sewing as a means of production, as expression and as the basis of a variety of narratives. The exhibition incorporates contemporary artworks, informed by earlier generations of women, which take a variety of forms-quilts, assemblage, hangings, embroidery on cloth and paper, among others-and that consciously blurs the art versus craft distinction.

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is pleased to announce C24 Gallery's exhibition of new works by New Orleans-based artist Skylar Fein.  The exhibition (the artist's first solo gallery exhibition in New York), will be on view through October 27, 2012, and presents a new series of politically inspired works that will include paintings, sculptures and prints. A conversation with the artist and Dan Cameron, Chief Curator, Orange County Museum of Art, will take place on Thursday, October 25 at 7:00pm.
Captured Invite
Bedford Gallery, Walnut Creek, CA
September 6- November 18, 2012

Captured features 25 artists, including Marcus Kenney and Michael Combs, whose work investigates the creative and unexpected dialogues that occur at the intersection of art and scientific exploration. As contemporary artists move beyond the restrictions of traditional media, many have begun to investigate the possibilities offered by organic, naturally occurring, and discarded materials. Looking to traditions as diverse as taxidermy, specimen boxes, and the cabinet of curiosities, this exhibition will address the changing nature of our relationship with the natural world, encouraging viewers to reimagine the creative possibilities of new media.
Paul Villinski, Conjecture, 2012

Alight (Solo Exhibition by Paul Villinski)
Tayloe Piggott Gallery, Jackson Hole WY
August 30- October 18, 2012

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is pleased to announce Paul Villinski's solo show Alightat Tayloe Piggot Gallery in Jackson Hole, WY, featuring the internationally acclaimed artist 's Jackson Hole debut. The exhibition will remain on display from through October 16.

Butterflies, the world over, symbolize metamorphosis - a universal meaning at work in his art. From chrysalis to caterpillar to color, butterflies take on many forms - a life cycle Villinski creates for cans. "I try to develop a conceptual unity between materials, process, and imagery," he said. "Metamorphosing littered beer cans into flocks of butterflies mirrors the act of transformation and rebirth that butterflies symbolize across all cultures."

Sidonie Villere Studio

Sidonie Villere has a BFA in Ceramics from The Newcomb School of Art at Tulane University and an MFA in Ceramics from The University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

As an artist her work has been exhibited across the United States and is in the permanent collection of several museum including The New Orleans Museum of Art, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art and Saks Fifth Avenue Department Stores in New York, Boston, Phoenix, San Francisco, Beverly Hills and most recently Chicago.

She has had solo exhibitions in Miami, Nashville and New Orleans and been featured in numerous group exhibitions in Atlanta, Miami, New York and New Orleans. As a curator, she has organized national ceramic exhibitions in New Orleans and Portland, OR.  Her large-scale works were recently featured in The P.1 Projects satellite exhibition at the Prospect.1 Biennial Welcome Center in 2008.  Villere's work is also included in the publication, 500 Ceramic Sculptures: Contemporary Practice, Singular Work, by Glen Brown, 2009. In 2011, her work was selected by collector/curator Beth Rudin DeWoody for the January White Sale, an international group exhibition in Chelsea and at Cynthia Volk Gallery New York during Asia Week.

Villere lives and works in New Orleans, LA where she maintains an active studio and also teaches ceramics at the prestigious Louise S. McGehee School.
