Family Fun Day Celebrates Gardens at County Museum
Every season, every place, every plant—everyone can garden! Celebrate gardens of all kinds at a Family Fun Day at the San Bernardino
County Museum on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This program is included with regular museum admission.
Celebrate Gardens will offer everything from visions to practical techniques, from vegetables to native plants, decorative to useful,
flowers to herbs, large to small, concept to completion. Resource conservation agencies, plant nurseries, master gardeners, food lovers, and garden enthusiasts will share ideas for garden plans and activities. Families can join in art making, story reading,
crafts, games, and poetry writing.
“The museum has several special gardens we invite people to explore and enjoy,” said Jolene Redvale, the museum’s curator of education.
“Our cactus gardens have been a showcase fixture since the museum opened in Bloomington in the 1950s; in fact, some of the cacti in our gardens today moved along with us from the Bloomington site to Redlands. We also have an ethnobotany garden that features
plants used traditionally by local Indians for food and medicine, and a native plants garden where people can see xeric plants and sustainable landscaping in action.”
Among the activities will be a special display of posters from SlowFoodUSA, “Lexicon of Sustainability,” presenting food from a
wide range of personal to community perspectives. PoetrIE: the Collective Voice of the Inland Empire will offer poetry workshops for all ages from noon to 1:30 p.m. with an additional session exploring advanced subjects and forms from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Celebrate
Gardens is supported in part by a grant from the Community Foundation Serving Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through
Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit
