The documentary film "Gesture" paints a collective portrait of the members of the underground Kiki Scene, their governance, style and talent as they redefine what it means to be 'at-risk'. Emerging out of the New York City House/Ballroom community, the Kiki scene is a highly organized and youth-led movement, focusing on personal and professional development as well as community leadership. These organizational efforts respond to the adversities this young demographic (primarily African American and Latino LGBTQ individuals between 14-25) face.
At the center of the underground Kiki Scene are the Kiki balls, where performers create unique looks related to a theme to compete for a prize awarded to their Kiki house. In the past 8 years, the Kiki Scene has been highly underground, with 10 currently active houses in the tristate area.
A transmedia project, "Gesture" is a unique collaboration between a Kiki scene outsider (visual artist and filmmaker Sara Jordenö) and an insider (Ballroom performer and Kiki house founder Twiggy Pucci Garçon) and is deeply anchored within the governing bodies of the Kiki Scene. In July 2012, Twiggy and Sara conceptualized "The Reincarnation of Rockland Palace", a Kiki Ball and public art project taking place at the grounds of a famous Harlem event hall, Rockland Palace, where elaborate drag balls were held during the Harlem Renaissance.
In collaboration with Document Journal, Damiani, Faces NY, Inc. and ARTBOOK | MoMA PS1, Sara Jordenö and Twiggy Pucci Garçon are hosting The Movement Ball, a Kiki Scene Performance event, the first ever public presentation of this underground scene at MoMA PS1.
