Museum Guest Lecture about Conservation Ecology
Dr. Michael Allen will present a guest lecture on conservation ecology at the San Bernardino County Museum on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. The lecture is free
and open to the public.
“The focus of conservation biology is rapidly moving beyond saving individual species to understanding and managing ecosystems in
which ecological processes sustain biological diversity,” said Allen. “Wildland ecosystems and individual species of concern in our region face four simultaneous and interactive challenges: climate change, air pollution, land fragmentation, and invasive species.”
Allen will outline the characteristics of these four challenges, discuss how they interact to affect species of concern, and offer some steps to improve conservation of endangered species and biodiversity.
Michael Allen is the Director of the UCR Center for Conservation Biology, and a Professor in the departments of Plant Pathology
and Microbiology, and Biology. His work focuses on management and restoration of southern California natural resources. He has more than 200 research publications in conservation and restoration biology, and currently manages projects across California measuring
biodiversity, soil-plant interactions and land use change.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Admission to the monthly guest lecture series is free. Parking is
free. For more information, visit www.sb countymuseum.org. The museum is accessible to persons with
