Ann Lovett & Mary Hafeli

Residuum

October 22 – November 18

Gallery talk Monday, October 22, 4:00 – 6:00 pm

WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FINE ARTS GALLERY invites you to Residuum, an exhibition of photo-encaustic works by Mary Hafeli and Ann Lovett. This collection of thirty images was inspired by their study of ancient Egyptian and Roman glass at the Art Institute of Chicago.  The appearance of this ancient glass, which exhibits luminous surfaces and depths of iridescent color, is achieved through centuries of oxidation and decay. Through their use of macro photography, digital printing, and incorporation of encaustic, Hafeli and Lovett and explore the concept of decay: both the beauty and tension it creates and the human desire to define and retain the impermanent.

Hafeli and Lovett describe the series as “reminiscent of topographical maps or planetary surfaces…the residue of decay creates these beautiful surfaces, and with this decay comes impending loss.” One can also perceive recognizable images, such as formulas and diagrams, within the layers of these works; coupled with the suffused colors and patterns they suggest what the artists call “a sense of foreboding for the things we create and for the natural world… we investigate the inevitability of entropy and the expectation of collapse.”

Mary Hafeli earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Art from the University of Michigan and a Master of Education and Doctorate of Education in Art and Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College in New York City. She has served as Dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at the State University of New York at New Paltz since July 2009; she previously served as Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has taught art education at such institutions as Columbia University Teachers College, Buffalo State College, the Pratt Institute and Long Island University – C.W. Post Campus.

Ann Lovett received a B.S. in Studio Art from Skidmore College and an M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art from Temple University. Her work has been exhibited in the Dorsky Gallery, New York; the Museum of Arts and Design and the Monique Goldstrom Gallery, New York; the Klingspor-Museum, Offenbach, Germany; the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. She has been an artist in residence at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland and the Visiting Artist’s and Scholar’s Program at the American Academy in Rome.
