Walls and Bridges, the Franco-American arts and ideas series which brought over 50 cultural events to New York in 2011 returns this month for a 10-day series of performances and critical explorations uniting French and American thinkers and artists.  Join us tonight for "A Portrait of the Man as an Animal".  Are we humans so special?  Four artists will probe the very nature of humanity, presenting and embodying the wild instincts and behaviors that reside in us.  After these performance-investigations, two distinguished paleoanthropologists, Ian Tattersall and Pascal Picq, will join the artists for a talk about the resemblances and differences between the species.
FREE!  Reservation required – email roulette@roulette.org with subject line “RSVP – Portrait of Man as an Animal”

Ned Sublette "Kiss You Down South"
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 @ 8:00 PM

Ned Sublette is one of the most unclassifiable talents of the New York music scene - a composer, musician, record producer and musicologist known for his exquisitely unique combination of Cuban and country styles. To mark the forthcoming release of "Kiss You Down South", his first album in over a decade, Ned Sublette is giving an exclusive solo concert performance of the album’s songs at Roulette.  "Kiss You Down South" is a stripped-down, 100% solo album made at New Orleans’s Piety Street Recording.  Produced by Ned Sublette with longtime colleagues Peter Gordon and Mark Bingham, it was conceived as “something I could sit down and do live without anyone else, just me and my guitar,” Sublette says, “something I could reproduce or surpass on stage.”  Don't miss this rare performance - Sublette's first NYC show in over two years!

Guy Klucevsek
Thursday, October 25, 2012 @ 8:00 PM

Guy Klucevsek will perform solos from the vast catalogue of over 100 pieces he has composed for accordion since 1982, including tributes to composers György Ligeti, Erik Satie, and Astor Piazzolla, and to fellow accordionists Lars Hollmer (Sweden), Kepa Junkera (Basque) and Ivan Milev (Bulgaria).  After intermission, Guy will be joined  by “New York’s reigning classical/jazz violinist” (The New Yorker), Todd Reynolds, to preview Guy’s score for Lionel Popkin’s new dance/theatre piece, “Ruth Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” inspired by the work of modern dance pioneer, Ruth St. Denis.

FROM OUR FRIENDS!

Symphony Space Presents
JOHN CAGE’S "How to Get Started"
November 1, November 15 and December 13

Your favorite literary & musical celebrities join forces and dare to think aloud in honor of John Cage's How To Get Started.  In 1989, Cage took the stage with ten note cards, shuffled the deck and spoke ‘off the cuff' on each idea. Now, one musician and one writer will come together to dare each other.  Nov. 1 stars Oscar Hijuelos (The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love) and Arturo O’Farrill (Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra).  More information HERE.

SEM Ensemble Presents
BEYOND CAGE FESTIVAL
October 22 through November 7

Beyond Cage focuses on John Cage's most significant (and rarely performed) works and his legacy in today's composition.  Featuring 8 concerts and 2 talks, the festival spans three generations, from Cage's closest associates to young emerging composers to display Cage's broad and lasting influence on the music of our times. Featuring work by Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Luigi Nono, Salvatore Sciarrino, Roscoe Mitchell, Petr Kotik, Lucie Vitkova, Alex Mincek, and Kate Soper, among others.  More information HERE.
