Alarm Will Sound
Thursday, October 18 at 8 p.m.

The Sheldon is pleased to welcome cutting-edge chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound for what they are calling their "St. Louis Season." The ensemble performs the newest music being composed today with energetic virtuosity and a sense of adventure, creating programs that not only span a wide range of styles, but also innovate the traditional concert experience itself.

The first of three performances during the 2012-13 season, the concert will offer a sampling of their diverse repertoire of modern music, including works composed by John Adams, Aphex Twin, Conlon Nancarrow, Edgard Varèse and Charles Wuorinen. The performance will conclude with two pieces composed specifically for Alarm Will Sound: Yotam Haber's We Were All, written for and first played at the 2011 Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, and Unremixed, composed by Alarm Will Sound cellist and University of Missouri music professor Stefan Freund.

The Sheldon: A Rich History
Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery
Ongoing through Februrary 2, 2013

Through photographs, plans, sketches and historical artifacts, the exhibition tells the story of The Sheldon, designed by 1904 World’s Fair architect Louis C. Spiering. Built in 1912 as the home of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, musicians and public speakers throughout the years have enjoyed the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall, which earned a reputation as “The Carnegie Hall of St. Louis.” Well-known singers and ensembles such as Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Willie Nelson, Jessye Norman and Renée Fleming and important speakers like Martha Gellhorn, Sir Julian Huxley, Margaret Mead, Thurgood Marshall, R. Buckminster Fuller, and more recently, John Waters and Garrison Keillor, have enthralled audiences from its stage.

The exhibition is supported by RMI Picture Framing.
