ArtFest workshop at County Museum
ArtFest workshops at the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm, offer museum visitors
a chance to participate in some popular, specialized fields of art. These workshops, part of the ArtMuse initiative sponsored in part by the James Irvine Foundation, are offered free with paid museum admission.
Have you ever wondered how the dynamic illustrations in your favorite comic books or graphic novels are created? Do you have a story
to tell in this format? Then join the team from Negative Studios and professional comic book artist Lou Guevara in the museum’s Fisk Gallery. Talk with David Arshawsky, Shane Curran, Rob Mardis, and Grant Sutton, artists, inkers, and writers, and then try
your hand at telling your story in this unique media using art materials the professionals use.
A cultural celebration of ancestors, Dia de Los Muertos—or Day of the Dead—is fast approaching. Upstairs in the museum’s Schuiling
Gallery, join professional sculptor Raul Acero and professional photographer Terry Long to explore their interpretations of traditional Dia de Los Muertos themes,
calaveritas de azucar (sugar skulls) and figuras de calacas (skeleton figures) both important elements in the celebration of remembering ancestors. Acero will lead informal drop-in workshops on sculpting
calacas, and Long will guide visitors in creating watercolor sugar skulls.
“The activities during this event offer opportunities for creative expression and family participation,” said Jolene Redvale, the
museum’s curator of education. “Plan to spend the afternoon, trying out each art form and creating art works to enjoy for years to come.”
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through
Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit
