Shakeout in the High Desert

Residents of the High Desert can join millions of Californians in participating in the Great California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill in history, at the Victor Valley Museum on October 19, 2012. The ShakeOut is organized to inspire Californians to get ready for big earthquakes and practice how to protect ourselves when it happens. Museum admission fees will be waived during the ShakeOut event and activities from 10am to noon.

 

During this educational and fun-filled event, museum visitors, including students, will participate in the Drop Cover and Hold On Drill. An Earthquake Preparedness Fair will include emergency responders, fire apparatus, CERT teams, the American Red Cross, and Apple Valley Ranchos Water Company.

 

Kathleen Springer, senior curator of geological sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum, will give a presentation, “Science Behind the ShakeOut,” describing the geologic underpinning behind the ShakeOut scenario earthquake as well as the damages and resulting losses that will occur when the southern San Andreas Fault unleashes a hypothetical magnitude 7.8 quake. Springer will be joined by First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt; Richard McCarthy, Executive Director of the California Seismic Safety Commission; and Sid Hultquist, fire chief of the Apple Valley Fire Protection District.

 

“Since the first ShakeOut in 2008, the San Bernardino County Museum has consistently been an advocate for earthquake education,” said Kathleen Springer, the museum’s senior curator of geological sciences. “The museum is committed to be southern California’s nexus for earthquake science and earthquake preparedness education. This year we look forward to school groups and the general public attending our event at the main museum in Redlands on October 18 or at the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley on Friday, October 19.”

 

The Victor Valley Museum is a branch of the San Bernardino County Museum located at 11873 Apple Valley Road in Apple Valley. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 (adult), $4 (senior or military), and $2.50 (student).
