The City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) is pleased to announce the establishment of Philadelphia’s first Youth Poet Laureate. The OACCE has instituted this position in order to promote interest in poetry throughout the city and to give one student an opportunity to develop his or her talents in poetry. This individual would also promote poetry through their work with Philadelphia’s Poet Laureate, Sonia Sanchez, and appearances in their capacity as Youth Poet Laureate.
Visit our website for full eligibility guidelines and application forms.
We are strongly encouraging schools, community organizations, and other organizations that work with children to become involved in the process and select nominees (preferably one to three) to represent your school or organization in the larger Youth Poet Laureate selection process. You may also nominate a young person who is not directly involved in your programs but who shows great potential as a young writer. It is our hope that you will also take this as an opportunity to educate and engage students on the subject of poetry. The method by which you select nominees is left wholly to your discretion; however, applications of nominated youth are due to be submitted online or postmarked to the OACCE by October 26, 2012. Please note that young persons may also be nominated by an adult who is familiar with them and their work and willing to be contacted as part of the Youth Poet Laureate selection process.
Thank you very much for your assistance in this process. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Michael P. Brown at (215) 686-4591 or michael.p.brown@phila.gov.
