The Guelph Lecture – On Being Canadian is an offering of the Eramosa Institute, a not-for-profit, charitable organization that exists to foster public dialogue on ideas and issues of concern to Canadians. Through a keynote lecture, literary and musical guests, a guest emcee, and an essay in the program, The Guelph Lecture seeks to showcase a broad variety of Canadians, at the top of their fields.

This year's Lecture, on Thursday, November 9th, presents author, Eleanor Wachtel. As host of CBC's Writers & Company, Wachtel will draw from her extensive experience in the literary world to demonstrate the importance of international authors to Canadians. Sarah Neufeld, a solo violinist who is best known for her work with Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre, will provide the evening's music, a fascinating mix of jazz, classical, and improvisational performance. For our keynote presentation, we are happy to say that Dr. Henry Mintzberg, will deliver a presentation titled Rebalancing Society...Canada as a Model?

In his presentation, Dr. Mintzberg will address the unequal distribution of power and economics among government, the public sector and what he calls the 'plural sector'. During a recent presentation at the University of Cape Town, Dr. Mintzberg argued that it is time to stop focusing only on the private and public sectors and start encouraging "communityship". That is, community-driven projects that fall somewhere between the private and public sectors. All of this serves Dr. Mintzberg's living thesis regarding the importance of management, something he early on defined as the ability to keep your head above water while being constantly interrupted. The practice of management doesn't change, regardless of the sector, making its lessons as relevant for Canada as it is for any of the companies and organizations he consults for.

Over the course of its ten year run, The Guelph Lecture has consistently brought musicians, authors, filmmakers, activists, and eminent thinkers under one roof. Recent presentations from the likes of Madeline Redfern, Jane Bunnett, Michael Helm, Mark Kingwell, Carolyn Mark, Oni the Haitian Sensation, John Ralston Saul, Kevin Breit, and Sandra Birdsell provide just a sample of our eclectic offerings, all aimed at provoking dialogue and awareness through an evening of ideas, perspectives and cultural offerings. Each year a concluding reception draws in members of the community to the conversation sparked by the evening's presentations, allowing them to express their own perspective on the issues at hand. In this regard, the Lecture is a interactive community presentation that forwards the work of culture in our community.

Through these avenues, the work of the Lecture is rooted in its relationships with a broad range of individuals and organizations that comprise the City of Guelph. From the TransCanada Institute's investment in literature presentations, along with Fortnight Music's co-presentation, through the volunteers and contributors, right down to each and every one of our attendees. Each partnership allows the Lecture to thrive and critically respond to the broad range of activities, interests, and investments that we make as local, national, and global citizens. For this, The Guelph Lecture – On Being Canadian would like to thank you for making our first ten years a remarkable experience. We are excited to embark on what is sure to be ten more years of stimulating and poignant presentations.
