Special Events Scheduled for White on White: Churches of Rural New England

Artist’s Talk with Steve Rosenthal Thursday, November 1 2pm White on White: Rural Churches of New England $7 (members $5) Register Online Rosenthal discusses the process of taking the meetinghouse photographs in White on White over a 45 year period. He emphasizes the urgency of preserving these structures that are threatened by the ravages of time, shrinking congregations, and increasing maintenance costs. A book signing concludes the event.

Benes’ new book, Meetinghouses of Early New England, is the definitive study of this hallmark of early American vernacular architecture. A book signing and light reception follows the presentation.

Annual Thorne Lecture
Saturday, November 10 5pm Peter Benes, Director of the Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife at Historic Deerfield The Meetinghouses of Early New England Although they were built primarily for public religious exercises, meetinghouses fulfilled multiple secular purposes. As the only municipal building in the community, the structures provided locations for town and parish meetings. They also hosted criminal trials, public punishments and executions, and political and religious protests, and on occasion they served as defensive forts, barracks, hospitals, and places to store gunpowder.

Caroli discusses how she influenced the First Ladies of the 21st century.

November 13 and 27 6:30-8:30 pm Ellen and Edith: Woodrow Wilson’s First Ladies by Kristie Miller, published in 2010 $12 for two sessions ($10 members) Register Online One of the most important biographies documenting the life of Ellen Axson Wilson, Ellen and Edith tells the story of Woodrow Wilson’s two strikingly different wives. Ellen was a quiet but forceful intellectual who died a mere year and a half into Wilson’s presidency, while Edith Bolling Wilson was flamboyantly confident, but left a legacy of controversy.

Sunday, November 18 2pm The South’s Greatest Son: Woodrow Wilson, the New South, and the Nation Yale University’s Samuel Schaffer $7 (members $5) Register Online Schaffer discuss the 1912 election of Woodrow Wilson, when for the first time since the Civil War, a Southern-born president occupied the White House. Schaffer’s talk explores how Wilson’s background as a white Southerner who had grown up during the Civil War and Reconstruction propelled his political career and shaped his administration.

Wee Faerie Village Extended with Special Offer to CT Educators
Wee Faerie Village has been extended one day. The Village will be open Tuesday, November 6 from 10am to 5pm.
Since many local educators have an in-service day, the Museum is offering free admission to all Connecticut educators with ID. It is the perfect opportunity to visit the Village, tour the current exhibitions, stop in the Hartman Education Center to meet our education staff and learn about our field trip options, and view the DVD “Once Upon a Time in Old Lyme."
