Last Chance to see For Farm Sake, this Saturday!

Last chance to see For Farm Sake: A Farmer's Exhibition at the detroit contemporary!

We cordially invite you to our Closing Reception
Saturday October 27th, 2012 from Noon to 7:00pm

Two relevant short-films will be screened from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

For Farm Sake highlights many of the urban farming organizations and individuals that have nurtured the growth of this powerful movement.  If you have not yet seen this unconventional exhibition, this will be your last chance. With over 28 artists and farmers exhibiting work accompanied by their selected stories and introducing the work of two documentary artists:

A City to Yourself
20 minutes
Screening at 4:00pm and 5:30pm

The film was shot between the years of 2005 and 2008 where Filmmaker and native Detroit resident, Nicole MacDonald, saw many changes occur in the city from building demolition to the planting of flowers. “It was one of many contradictions... I tried to document in my film,” she says. The film has won the John Michaels Award at the 31st Big Muddy Film Festival in Carbondale, Ill., which awards films for community activism and social consciousness and was accepted to the Washington, D.C. Independent Film Festival and Media City International Festival of Film and Video Art in Windsor.

Land of Freedom
30 minutes
Screening at 4:45pm and 6:15pm

This film evolves around a group of white artists who have separately taken the initiative to settle down in the primarily black district of Near East Detroit. We meet visual artist KT who is the co-founder of the art collective The Yes Farm, urban farmer Emily the Poet, and Monk, who grew up in the neighborhood. The girls/newcomers are admired by  Larry D`Mongo, «King of the underground», who shares his insight on Detroit’s rise and fall, and analyze the importance of what the urban farmers are doing as a counter movement to the global food industry.
The film is based on Artist Siri Hermansen’s meetings, conversations and participation in everyday activities while living with a group of artist farmers who have settled in one of the more underprivileged areas of Detroit. The manner in which Hermansen guides the viewer through these places by means of subjective perspectives allows us to see these places in both real and mythical dimensions. Her approach also discusses the ancient role of the guide as a storyteller and a carrier of wisdom and truth for society.
