SLICE QUILT: All for One Quilters
[NEQM 2003.05-5533]

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 27th - 1PM

Join us this Saturday, October 27th, for the official opening reception for Great Quilts, Great Stories: Treasures from the Permanent Collection, featuring a talk by curator Pam Weeks.

History can be learned from quilts, which often tell stories of events great and small. Through quilts from the museum's Permanent Collection, learn about the death of an English princess, the opening of sea trade with the Orient, the battlefield life of a Civil War soldier, the travels of a portrait painter among native peoples in the 1840s.

Objects and illustrations from museums and private collections together with quilts from our Permanent Collection tell fascinating stories you’ll remember always.

~ curated by Pamela Weeks & Kate Hanson Plass

OUR SILVER ANNIVERSARY YEAR
"WINES" DOWN

It's hard to believe that our 25th Anniversary celebrations are almost over!

We've had a very busy year: a spring garden party; the Backstitch exhibition, looking back at developments in quilting over the 25 years; a lecture by quilting legend Marianne Fons, founder of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, along with her daughter Mary, founder of Hey Quilty, a web show and magazine aimed at new and younger quilters; a panel with the Fons ladies and members of the Boston Modern Quilt Guild discussing where quilting is heading; and the very successful Silver Threads Quilt Challenge, in which quilters from all over the country--and even Europe--gave us their quilt interpretation of the meaning of "silver." (The Silver Threads Challenge quilts are now on display in our multipurpose room.)

On Thursday, November 15th at 5PM, join us for our 25th Anniversary "Wine Down" reception honoring all our supporters and local partners. We'll be anoouncing the winners of the Silver Threads Quilt Challenge and unveiling our wonderful 25th Anniversary Signature Quilt.

Didn't get a chance to sign up to have your name on the signature quilt? No problem. There are a few open blocks left. You can still be immortalized on this beautiful quilt, which will become part of the museum's Permanent Collection. For details on how to put a name on the quilt, come to the reception, call the museum (978-452-4207 ext.12) or visit our website.

Here's to the next 25 years!

MODERN MASTER'S QUILT
COMES TO THE MUSEUM

The New England Quilt Museum recently acquired an early piece by Michael James, titled Construction, 1986. Michael James grew up and was educated in art schools in Massachusetts. He started quilting shortly after grad school and quickly became an early leader in the art quilt movement. James has long been recognized as one of the world’s leading quilters, with works in corporate and private collections as well as museums around the world—except in the New England Quilt Museum! We have long wished for a piece of his work for our permanent collection, especially one of the early pieces he made while still living in Somerset, MA.

For more about this acquisition, see our blog (click here).
