Groombridgeâs latest solo exhibition at the gallery â running concurrently with small telescopes, his retrospective at YYZ in Toronto â continues his measured and highly conceptual investigations of epistemological concerns. On the main floor, a pair of custom-designed flags convey ideas of observation and enlightenment via their illustrations: the first depicts a contour drawing of an astronomerâs chair â a one-of-a-kind seat with a backrest set at a sharp inclination so that the sitter may gaze at the stars â and the second a carefully plotted grid of symbols from a set of 15th century French playing cards, expressed in an unorthodox colour palette. On the second floor, four aluminum panels that, with their esoteric vocabulary of symbols and words and oblique position on the wall, are potential new tools or templates to measure and catalogue the world.
