"AMAZON GOLD"

Director: Reuben Aaronson
November 2nd • 7:00 PM

Barnsdall Theatre - 4800 Hollywood Blvd. LA, CA. 90027

"Amazon Gold" • Director: Reuben Aaronson
Narrated by Academy Award winners, Sissy Spacek and Herbie Hancock, "Amazon Gold" is the disturbing account of a clandestine journey bearing witness to the apocalyptic destruction of the rainforest in the pursuit of illegally mined gold.

Two journalists who normally cover war and human rights issues travel along Peru's Madre de Dios River to reveal the savage unraveling of pristine rainforest. Left in the wake of almost surreal images of once extraordinary beauty turned into hellish wasteland, "Amazon Gold" reaffirms the right of the rainforest to exist as a repository of priceless biodiversity and not as the toxic remains of man's greed for gold.

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

"Over Troubled Waters" • Director: Russell Fisher

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the largest estuary on the west coast of the Americas, is a national treasure being squandered by greed.

Actor-advocate Ed Begley, Jr. narrates the story of the battle being fought by the people of the Delta to protect the region they love, and to encourage saner water policies for the Golden State and all the people of California.

A visually stunning film told through the words of an ancient shepherd, the viewer is guided through the life of the Borana, a semi nomadic population in the south of Ethiopia that struggle perennially for survival.

During the long periods of annual drought, the Borana life revolves around ancient perpetual wells, the only resource against the tragic effects of global climate change.

Every day the young shepherds form human chains to reach the great depths of the wells and fetch life giving water. Their hard work is stressed by a chant that draws their great herds, who after days of walking in search of pasture are finally coming home to drink at the singing wells.

"Bidder 70"

Director: George Gage
November 3rd • 2:30 PM

Barnsdall Theatre - 4800 Hollywood Blvd. LA, CA. 90027

"Bidder 70" • Director: George Gage
"BIDDER 70" centers on an extraordinary, ingenious and effective act of civil disobedience demanding government and industry accountability.

In 2008, university student Tim DeChristopher committed an act which would redefine patriotism in our time. In order to save 14 pristine parcels of land in Utah (totaling 22,500 acres) from environmental devastation and corporate interest, he single-handedly outbid a group of investors at a public auction.

In an interesting turn of events, DeChristopher was removed from the auction in handcuffs by FBI agents, taken into custody, and ultimately sentenced to two years in prison!  This ignited a spirit of civil disobedience in the name of climate justice that spread across the country. Follow Tim, "Bidder 70", from college student to incarcerated felon, and redefine justice for yourself.

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

"Machine Man" • Director: Alfonso Moral
A reflection on modernity and global development, this story takes place in the capital of Bangladesh, where the 'machine men' execute different physical labor, and become a driving force behind the city.
