The internet as galaxy, the internet as ocean, the internet as desert – to relate to this sublime virtual space, we try to compare it to the expansive physical terrains that we can see, touch or inhabit. And a digital space may not be something so alien and separate from an organic one; the two could be thought of as coextensive and interpenetrating realms, both in how we imagine and live in them.

irl (a chat room acronym for “in real life”) presents net-based works that play on the border (imagined, perceived, felt) between virtual and physical presence. Abstract, organic, and otherworldly forms and patterns abide in Townhouse’s First Floor Gallery and Factory, which have been transformed into meditative spaces for communal encounters between the body and the digital image.

The represented artists discard the idea of the browser as a window into an alternate reality, through which the viewer is absorbed into an image or narrative. These digital artworks establish an almost material presence in the exhibition space, through the texture of light projected on a wall, a sense of gravity pulling on a membrane-like screen, or the volume of otherworldly forms that penetrate and mix realities.

Come to the Rooftop Studios on Wednesday, October 31 at 7 pm for the season’s first Wednesday Wagbas! This month’s meal: pierogi!

The Townhouse is awarding LE 2,000 to support new projects selected from an open call. On October 31, the Wednesday Wagbas grantees will present their winning proposals and get feedback and support from you, the audience.

In addition to the artist presentations, audience members can enjoy delicious homemade food served up by a special guest chef for a donation of 20 LE. These donations go directly back into the granting program to support more artists’ projects throughout the year. The more people that attend the meal, the bigger the Wednesday Wagba grant will grow from month to month!

Film Screening
On Syria by Syria

In a continuous fight with the undeniably difficult situation in Syria, its youth found creative channels to expressing their opinions, observations and hopes for a better future. A selection of short films (mainly shot through mobile cameras) illustrating day to day events and decisions faced by various characters of Syrian society will be presented in Townhouse's library in recognition of the ongoings of the Syrian Revolution.
(This selection has been made with the help of Syrian activists in hopes of shedding light upon the aesthetics of protest and in support of Syria. Special thanks to Shady Shehadeh)
