Cologne Fine Art & Antiques und ART COLOGNE
Long-standing Cologne art shows have distinctive profiles – for lasting success

Koelnmesse hosts two of the world’s longest running art shows – Cologne Fine Art & Antiques and ART COLOGNE. These events are so successful because each show has a clearly defined profile and effectively utilises synergies from the other.

While Cologne Fine Art & Antiques covers the spectrum from antique to modern art, and the “Design” and “Works on paper” sections extend to the present day, ART COLOGNE specifically focuses on progressive art, and represents the interplay of classic modern, post-war and contemporary art.

“The advantage of these two trade shows is the opportunity we have to offer all genres of art – from the old masters to the “cutting edge art” of the past few years – without watering down the character of each event,” explained Daniel Hug, Director of ART COLOGNE. “The shows also benefit from the organisational and communication-based synergies we have used successfully for many years and aim to strengthen in future.” Cornelia Zinken, Director of Cologne Fine Art & Antiques, added: “Certainly, there is some overlap between the two shows – in the area of classic modern and post-war art, or the contemporaries represented in the “Works on paper” section of Cologne Fine Art & Antique. At the same time, the context in which these works is presented is always different, which allows users to experience them in a new and unique way. This emphasises the crossover principle we have used in Cologne for many years now.”

Over 40 years of Cologne art trade shows
The Cologne art trade shows look back on a long tradition. ART COLOGNE is considered the world’s oldest show for contemporary art. It dates back to the “Kölner Kunstmarkt” (“Cologne Art Market”), which Cologne gallery owners Rudolf Zwirner and Hein Stünke launched as a trade show for progressive art in 1967. Shortly thereafter, in 1970, the first “Westdeutsche Kunstmesse” (“West German Art Show”) was held as a predecessor to today’s Cologne Fine Art & Antiques – an event which combines art, handicrafts and design from several centuries.

ART COLOGNE takes place each spring, while Cologne Fine Art and Antiques is always held in the autumn. This makes it possible to highlight the specific artistic focal points of each event more effectively.
