Released in 1968, Danny Lyon's book The Bikeriders became one of the most influential photographic works of the decade. It chronicles his four years as a bike rider (1963-1967), including two as a member of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Using a tape recorder and his Nikon and Rolleiflex cameras, Lyon documented this little known culture from the seat of his motorcycle.
The Bikeriders launched Lyon's career, and introduced motorcycle counterculture to mainstream America. In its mix of realism and romanticism, the images in his book helped sear motorcycle counterculture into the American psyche, and was an inspiration for the 1969 film Easy Rider.
Lyon’s photographs are included in the collections of the American Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian Institute; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, The Museum of Modern Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others.
