All Aboard! Train Days at the County Museum
Railroad fans of all ages are invited to visit the San Bernardino County Museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday
and Sunday, January 19 and 20—it’s All Aboard for Train Days!
The museum will be filled with large and small model train layouts, real railroad artifacts, and activities for
the whole family. The Pacific Coast Modular Club, Orange County Modular Railroaders, and Antelope Valley N-Scalers will install huge layouts with running trains, beautiful scenery, and miniature buildings. Other models will include a traveling circus, a monorail,
and trolleys.
“Inspect real train artifacts and enjoy making special train related crafts, with some especially for young visitors
ages 3 to 6. Design a logo for your own imaginary railroad and create your own train locomotive in 2D, using all your favorite parts of the engine,” said Carla Rosenkild, museum educator. “Watch as model trains and trolleys steam past country scenery or zoom
through tiny cities. You can talk to real engineers and other railroad workers. There will even be special train memorabilia for sale in the gift shop.”
Visitors will also see the restoration progress being made on the museum’s Southern Pacific locomotive 2825 and
AT & SF caboose 1333 in the courtyard.
On Sunday, January 20 during Train Days, the Redlands 4th of July Band will perform two thirty-minute
concerts in the courtyard at 1:30 and 2:15 p.m. Some favorite selections will include “Put Me Off at Redlands” and “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, along with other train-related tunes.
“Everyone loves trains, or so it seems from all the folks who have enjoyed Train Days in previous years,” said
Jolene Redvale, curator of education. “This year’s Train Days event is dedicated to the memory of Nancy Kirkwood, Museum Educator, who succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2012. “Nancy was the heart and brain of Train Days,”
said Redvale. “And her spirit is here with us this year, seen through the eyes and in the hearts of our visitors, young and old and in between. She is definitely expecting us to live up to her standards.”
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and
holiday Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 (adult), $6 (senior or military), $5 (student), $4 (child aged 5 to 12), and children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit
