VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) is pleased to present Shakers & Movers, a group exhibition curated by Birte Kleemann, which explores performance art and actions within the context of the political situation in Germany during the 1960s and 1970s. Shakers & Movers features Mary Bauermeister, Joseph Beuys, Sylvano Bussotti, James Lee Byars, John Cage, VALIE EXPORT, Jürgen Klauke, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Ulay.

The post-World War II period saw the development of new approaches to artistic expression and political activism. The new generation of artists emerging in West Germany experimented with performance and collaboration and incorporated media from beyond the traditional boundaries of studio practice, such as sound and film. One consequence of this new approach was an increasing awareness of the body as a tool both for expression and criticism within the public realm. A new identity of the artist is asserted in which the self is measured in the interaction with the other, both mirroring and questioning societal norms. Within the context of social and political developments in the young democratic Germany, and against the backdrop of a lingering Cold War, the exploration of new territories in art, literature, theater and music are a form of Brechtian catharsis. Shakers & Movers presents a brief and selected history of the performances and actions triggered by renewed social awareness in an era of lost innocence.

Shakers & Movers takes as its starting point the beginnings of the Fluxus movement and the multimedia "happenings" created at Mary Bauermeister's studio, the most important of these being Originale, composed by Karlheinz Stockhausen. International and cross-cultural collaboration is a hallmark of the artistic activities of this period and participants in the many actions at Bauermeister's studio included Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Nam June Paik and David Tudor, among others. Originale was later brought to New York City and re-staged there on the invitation of Charlotte Moorman, who from then on collaborated with Paik on numerous projects.

Following the student demonstrations of the late sixties and amidst increasingly political instability within West German society, more overtly politicized artistic actions emerge. Joseph Beuys' Ausfegen, enacted on the Karl-Marx-Platz in Berlin following the labor day demonstrations of 1972, highlighted the gap between leftist political ideologies and their real-world manifestations. One month later, at Documenta 5 in Kassel, Beuys installed an office of his Organization for Direct Democracy by Referendum as his contribution to the exhibition. James Lee Byars' performance Calling German Names was also presented at Documenta 5: from the roof of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, the artist, shrouded in red fabric, shouted common German first names through a golden megaphone; he was alternately cheered and jeered by student demonstrators below. Ulay's highly charged Irritation...There is a Criminal Touch to Art also went beyond mere symbolism, violating the sacred boundaries of the art institutions to address poverty and isolation among Berlin's Turkish community.

Meanwhile, other artists increasingly moved toward an introspection of the self. Jürgen Klauke worked to negate fixed gender identity. His Illusion of 1972 is a reduced, ambivalent self-portrait in which the artist poses a simple, provocative question. VALIE EXPORT strives for a new understanding of gender roles in society. Her 1977 work, DELTA. Ein Stück, which appeared at Documenta 6, investigates the disparate role assignments of male and female and argues for a change in the public consciousness toward feminist goals. The exhibition closes with Yoko Ono's Blue Room Event of 1966, subtly engaging the audience through a series of written directives.

Shakers & Movers opens on Saturday 19 January at 17:00 with a talk between Dr. Eckhart Gillen and Ulay. On Tuesday 22 January at 19:00 Alexandre Babel performs works of John Cage and James Tenney. The program includes the percussion solos Child of Tree (1975) and Atlas Eclipticalis (1961-1962) by Cage and Tenney's solo for tamtam, Having never written a note for percussion (1971).

VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) freut sich Shakers & Movers, eine Gruppenausstellung zu Performances und Aktionen in Deutschland der 1960er und 1970er Jahre zu präsentieren. Shakers & Movers, kuratiert von Birte Kleemann, zeigt Arbeiten und Kollaborationen von Mary Bauermeister, Joseph Beuys, Sylvano Bussotti, James Lee Byars, John Cage, VALIE EXPORT, Jürgen Klauke, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Karlheinz Stockhausen und Ulay.

Die Entwicklung neuer Ansätze im künstlerischen Ausdruck durch politischen Aktivismus motiviert, kennzeichnet die Nachkriegsgeneration der jungen Bundesrepublik. In Kollaborationen wird mit neuen Medien experimentiert, Ton und Film erweitern die traditionelle Atelierpraxis. Durch den Einsatz des Körpers als Instrument für Kritik und Interaktion mit der Öffentlichkeit wird eine Sensibilisierung der Umwelt erzielt. Diese neue Identitätsbehauptung der Künstler wird sowohl durch Spiegelung, als auch durch Hinterfragung bestehender gesellschaftlicher Normen errungen. Vor dem Hintergrund eines latenten Kalten Krieges werden neue Gebiete in allen Sparten der Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Musik erforscht, und oft durch eine Form der Brecht'schen Katharsis inszeniert.

Als Ausgangspunkt in der Ausstellung dienen die Anfänge der Fluxus-Bewegung und der Multimedia Happenings im Atelier Mary Bauermeister; herausragend hier das kollaborative Stück Originale von Karlheinz Stockhausen. Internationale und interkulturelle Zusammenarbeit ist ein Markenzeichen der künstlerischen Aktivitäten dieser Zeit, und so finden sich bei den vielen Aktionen bei Bauermeister unter anderem Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Nam June Paik und David Tudor ein. Originale wird später auf Einladung von Charlotte Moorman in New York City re-inszeniert, welches den Beginn ihrer Kooperation mit Paik markiert.

Zeitgleich mit den studentischen Demonstrationen der späten Sechziger, und zunehmender politischer Umwälzungen in Westdeutschland, entstehen zahlreiche offen politisch motivierte künstlerische Aktionen. Joseph Beuys' 1.Mai Aktion Ausfegen auf dem Karl-Marx-Platz in West-Berlin 1972, thematisiert die Diskrepanz zwischen linker politischer Ideologie und ihrer Umsetzung. Einen Monat später auf der Documenta 5 in Kassel, installiert Beuys sein Büro Organisation für direkte Demokratie durch Volksabstimmung. Am selben Ort präsentiert James Lee Byars die Performance Calling German Names vom Dach der Kunsthalle Fridericianum. Der Künstler, in roten Stoff gehüllt, ruft deutsche Vornamen durch ein goldenes Megaphon, und wird gleichermaßen vom Publikum bejubelt wie verhöhnt. Ulay's hochpolitische Arbeit Irritation...There is a Criminal Touch to Art verletzt bewusst die heiligen Grenzen der Kunstinstitution, um die Armut und Isolation der türkischen Gemeinschaft in Berlin anzuprangern.

Andere Künstler hingegen wenden sich stärker der Hinterfragung und Bestimmung des Individuums in der Gesellschaft zu. So verweist Jürgen Klauke's ambivalentes Selbstportrait in Illusion von 1972 auf die Provokation von stereotypischen Wahrnehmungsformen, indem er die eindeutige Zuweisung der geschlechtlichen Identität verweigert. VALIE EXPORT strebt ein neues Rollenverständnis in der Gesellschaft an. Ihr Documenta 6 Beitrag von 1977, DELTA. Ein Stück, untersucht Zuweisungen gängiger Geschlechterrollen und plädiert für eine feministischere Neuausrichtung der Zweierbeziehung von Mann und Frau. Die Ausstellung schließt mit der Installation Blue Room von Yoko Ono von 1966 - ein Werk, das erst durch das Erfassen der subtilen Notationen durch den Besucher als interaktive Auseinandersetzung erfahrbar wird.

Shakers & Movers eröffnet am Samstag, den 19. Januar um 17.00 Uhr mit einem Gespräch zwischen Ulay und Dr. Eckhart Gillen.

Am Dienstag, dem 22. Januar um 19:00 Uhr spielt Alexandre Babel Werke von John Cage und James Tenney. Das Programm beinhaltet die Percussion-Soli Child of Tree (1975) und Atlas Eclipticalis (1961-1962) von Cage und Tenney's Solo für tam-tam, Having never written a note for percussion (1971).
