SUPPORT RIVA COHEN, OUR WORTHY SA ART SAINT:
The Atlantic Art Gallery Collection of Contemporary SA Art goes on auction at Rudds.

The kindly Riva Cohen, director of the Atlantic Art Gallery, has been an amazing patron of the arts since 1968. She has supported many up-and-coming artists – both before and during their professional careers in good and bad times. After many years and due to ailing health, Riva closed her gallery and subsequently a colourful chapter in Cape Town’s art history. A great number of quality works by prominent local artists will be auctioned at Rudds, Bree Street, (www.rudds.co.za) on Wednesday the 30th January. Read more here on our Face Book Page

African art may get London fair
THE ART NEWSPAPER. By Anna Somers Cocks.Fair will be international, de luxe and is planned for 2013. Africa is increasingly seen as the continent of opportunity, and where there is economic vigour, the West starts looking for new talent to feed the market. So African art could now be getting its own international fair, from 14 to 20 October 2013, to coincide with Frieze. Its name is 1:54, there being 54 sovereign countries in Africa. Source

History of art: a degree for the elite?
GUARDIAN (UK) For too long the study of art has been dismissed as a pastime for the well-heeled. This stereotype is unfair and outdated
Art. A word that has sat on a gleaming plinth and peered down at us mere mortals for centuries. In the past, the study of art was reserved for the wealthy and educated. Even today, galleries have become an elitist haven for the middle-classes. Source

Photography is the art of our time
GUARDIAN (UK) . The old masters painted the drama of life and death. Today photography captures the human condition - better than any other artistic medium of our age. It has taken me a long time to see this, and you can laugh at me if you like. But here goes.Photography is the serious art of our time. It also happens to be the most accessible and democratic way of making art that has ever been invented. But first, let's define photography. Source

Giant rubber duck brings Sydney art festival to life
AFP : A gigantic, bright yellow rubber duck floated into Sydney's Darling Harbour on Saturday as part of the Australian city's annual arts festival, a celebration where high-art meets popular entertainment. Each January hundreds of thousands of people attend theatre, music, dance, film, talks and other events for three weeks, often braving sweltering summer temperatures and thunderstorms for their dose of culture. BUSINESS ART

What's in store for the market?
THE ART NEWSPAPER (UK). The growing numbers of the super-rich should keep the auction houses happy in 2013, but there are tougher times ahead for some. In January 2012, the outlook for the art market was bleak, with turmoil in the eurozone and recession in many of the world's major economies. Nothing changed-at the macro level, at least-throughout the year, so art dealers finished 2012 surprised that, for many, trade was not as bad as expected. Source

Art as an investment
SCMP: There are many collectors of fine art but few have made it into a profitable venture, writes Tiffany AP. A Van Gogh or a Picasso is valuable, but is it a good investment? Certainly the art world is filled with stories of sharp-eyed collectors who snapped up pieces from young, unknown artists only to see their value soar, Source

Citadel releases Art Stats
Art steals the show! Despite many uncertainties at the outset, 2012 is turning out to be a cracker-jack year for most global asset markets. Few investors expected global equities to be double digit positive, so having nearly all asset classes positive is indeed a rare surprise. Source
