Utopia/Dystopia
December 21–February 10
Utopia/Dystopia artwork is currently on display throughout the UICA’s 4 floors of gallery spaces, including several large-scale multi-sensory installations. Several indigenous cultures have predicted a significant shift within our Western view of the world is set to occur on December 21, 2012, and the exhibition offers the community an opportunity to ponder some relevant and pressing contemporary issues, namely will our insatiable quest for “progress” within Western culture lead to our ultimate destruction? In which direction does utopia exist, behind us, in this moment, our future, or solely in our imaginations?

Chasing Ice

In Chasing Ice, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Traveling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his well-being in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. As the debate polarizes America, and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, Chasing Ice depicts a heroic photojournalist on a mission to deliver fragile hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Earth is a 1998 film based on Bapsi Sidhwa's novel Cracking India. The story is set in Lahore in the time period directly before and during the partition of India in 1947. A young girl, Lenny, narrates the story through the voice of her adult self. She is from a wealthy Parsi family who hopes to remain neutral to the rising tensions between Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims in the area. Lenny's nanny Shanta, a beautiful Hindu woman, is involved with the masseur Hassan, a Muslim. Both are part of a small group of friends from different faiths (some of whom work for Lenny's family). However, with the partition of India, this once unified group of friends becomes divided and tragedy ensues, when a train of Muslims arrives at the local depot.

Sound City
Thursday, January 31 | 8 PM
A special one-night-only presentation to celebrate the 2/1/13 release of the new documentary by Dave Grohl! Deep in the San Fernando Valley, amidst rows of dilapidated warehouses, was rock n' roll's best kept secret: Sound City. America's greatest unsung recording studio housed a one-of-a-kind console, and as its legend grew, seminal bands and artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Metallica and Nirvana all came out to put magic to tape. Directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and featuring interviews and performances from the iconic musicians who recorded some of rock’s greatest albums at the studio, Sound City doesn’t just tell the story of this real-life rock ’n’ roll shrine, it celebrates the human element of music as Grohl gathers some of rock's biggest artists to collaborate on a new album. Using Sound City's legendary analog console, together these artists continue to create musical miracles in a digital world.

Beware of Mr. Baker
Opens February 8
Born in South East London the same week the Nazis began bombing, Ginger Baker’s first memory was running after a train that carried his father off to death in WWII. From his music to his life, at the expense of family and fortune, Ginger would never be left behind on the tracks again. Though best known for his work with Eric Clapton in Cream and Blind Faith, the world’s greatest drummer did not hit his stride until years later in 1972 when he drove the first Range Rover ever produced from London to Nigeria in pursuit of the African rhythms and musical icon, Fela Kuti. There he found his Mecca of drumming, introducing the African beat and “world music” to the West, years before any other musicians in the field. The documentary includes stories from his ex-wives, children, and many of the greatest living musicians that worked with Ginger including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Charlie Watts, Mickey Hart, Carlos Santana, Max Weinberg, Chad Smith, Femi Kuti, Neal Peart, Simon Kirke, Marky Ramone and many more. Winner of the Grand Jury Award for Documentary Feature at SXSW 2012.

“An aggressively unpleasant man somehow lands a perfect series of gigs in this rudely funny documentary: first as a pounding rock drummer who revolutionized the field; then as a fearless, rage-filled polo player; and finally as an impatient interviewee.”
– Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

The Powerbroker follows his journey from segregated Kentucky to head of the National Urban League. Beirut Hotel
Sunday, March 10 | 2:30 PM
Free Screening
Beirut Hotel (Beirut bel layl) was directed in 2011 by Lebanese film maker
Danielle Arbid. Banned from viewing in Lebanon due to mentioning the Hariri assassination in the plot, the film tells the story of Zoha, a young Lebanese singer trying to break free of her ex-husband's influence and Mathieu, a French lawyer suspected of being a spy. Over ten days, they experience an affair made up of fear and desire, intrigue and violence. The censors claimed that “the film’s depiction of the political situation would endanger Lebanon’s security.” Since the end of the fifteen-year-long war, in 1990, Lebanese officials have been promoting a dangerous amnesia to the country’s troubles. Artists, especially filmmakers, have been continuously trying to counter that amnesia by creating works that discuss, confront, and analyze Lebanon’s tempestuous past and present.
