Salton Sea lecture at County Museum
Museum Director and ornithologist Robert McKernan will give a talk about birds of the Salton Sea on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at
the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. The illustrated lecture, which will start at 2:00 pm, is included with museum general admission.
The program is designed to provide an introduction to the Salton Sea for people planning to attend McKernan’s day trip to the area
on January 26 and to share some of the riches of the region with those who are not able to visit in person. McKernan, who has spent more than 30 years studying birds in the Salton Sink, will detail the bird abundance, the history of sea, and a detailed perspective
on how critical this inland lake and the Salton Sink is to North American bird populations.
“The Salton Sea is the largest inland surface water body in California and supports one of the most diverse bird populations in
the United States, with more than 375 species,” said McKernan. “To spend a winter day at the Salton Sea is one of a California’s great experiences. It is one of the most impressive areas in the nation for observing wintering bird life.”
The January 26 day trip will explore various haunts around the Salton Sea and provide an opportunity to learn about the unique natural
history of the Salton Basin. Limited space is still available and reservations can be made by calling the Museum Association at (909) 307-2669 ext. 250.
