Art News:

Anat Ebgi and Esther Kim Varet of Various Small Fires are pleased to present Fil Rouge, a show curated by
LUCIE FONTAINE for the
Art Los Angeles Contemporary art fair

Barker Hanger, Santa Monica, CA.

The term fil rouge, or red thread, is found within different cultures with significance and meaning varying widely depending on context. In French, the term highlights a guiding thread or a common element that links different parts of a discourse. In East Asia, the term ‘red thread’ occupies an even richer and deeper meaning rooted in Chinese mythology. According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of those who are destined to meet in order to help one another. Connected by the red thread, they become destined lovers, transcending time, place, and circumstance. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but it never breaks. This myth is similar to the Western concept of soul mates or twin flames.

Conjoining the French and East Asian meanings for the fair, Lucie Fontaine presents a group show featuring artworks selected from the gallery inventory of Anat Ebgi and Various Small Fires. Linking all the works included in the booth is the color red, which adds a literal layer to the curatorial premise of Fil Rouge. These works are exhibited within a site-specific display conceived by Ms. Fontaine. In the spirit of her previous projects, Lucie also presents her own artworks, created especially for this occasion and juxtaposed with those she has selected for the group exhibition.

Furthermore, Fil Rouge serves as the prelude to Lucie, an exhibition by Lucie Fontaine that will open simultaneously at Anat Ebgi and Various Small Fires on Valentine’s Day, 2013.
