Last week Witte de With kicked off its 2013 program with Tulkus 1880 to 2018, a mastodontic artwork and work in progress by Paola Pivi, based on an extensive international research.

Aimed at creating a complete collection of portraits and basic information on all the tulkus of the world–who, in Tibetan Buddhism, are the recognized reincarnations of previous Buddhist masters–from the beginning of photography until today, from all the schools of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon religion, and from all the areas of the world where this religion is practiced, this growing survey has until now collected over 1100 photographic portraits.

EVENT
Lacing Buddhist Threads in Contemporary Art

Saturday 2 February 2013, 2pm

This transversal event joins together a set of thinkers so as to draw out just a few rich strands from the art and culture, which bind Buddhist history. Curator Davide Quadrio will lead the audience through the visual narrative depicted in the 17th century Tibetan thangka (painting) portraying Tsuglag Gyatso, the Third Pawo Rinpoche (c 1567–1630), which references to the origin of the tulku photographic portrait tradition and hangs in the Witte de With galleries as a loadstone for the general exhibition.

Expanding on the contemporary history of Buddhism in the West, artist Louwrien Wijers will in conversation with art historian Arnisa Zeqo trace early parallels between pre-Christian iconography, and the Buddha’s image, punctuated by personal reflections on Wijers’ introduction of the 14th Dalai Lama to Joseph Beuys and the European art scene in the 1980s. Read more

CAUSERIE
Causerie: Woody Allen

Saturday 16 February 2013, 2pm

No one could challenge Woody Allen's cultural and creative relevance. Equally acclaimed as a stand-up comedian, a screenwriter, a fiction writer, and of course a director, he embodies a total figure of art.  During this Causerie, artist and writer Alexandre Singh explores the deeper underlying themes that make Allen's work so relevant and complex, albeit attractive: from Fate to the Self, from humor to tragedy, themes that simultaneously pertain to Singh’s ambitious theatrical production The Humans will be placed under close scrutiny.

Singh will be joined by philosopher Liesbeth Levy, specialized in the philosophy of ethics and alterity, as well as classicist Nick Lowe, in order to draw out parallels between Allen’s films and the plays written by the Ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. Proust scholar Donatien Grau will join Singh in his conversations. Read more

This event will also be live-streamed on our website.

C.o.C.A. Commission Winner
Artist Talk: Friday 8 February 2013, 7pm with introduction by Alexander Ramselaar (C.o.C.A) & Amira Gad (Witte de With)

For its third edition of C.o.C.A Commission, artist Jay Tan (UK, 1982), recommended by curator Amira Gad (Witte de With), has been selected as the winner of the 2012 C.o.C.A. commission. Tan will present her work at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art during the period of Art Rotterdam.

Each year, C.o.C.A. (Collectors of Contemporary Art) appoints a curator who is a key figure in the Dutch contemporary art scene to recommend a shortlist of artists that fit into the foundation’s profile. Based on the submitted proposals, the board of C.o.C.A then selects one artist who receives a grant to realize the project proposed. The resulting work (or an edition of it) becomes part of the foundation’s collection.

On view: February 6 till March 31 2013.
