Peter Clarke: Wind Blowing on the Cape Flats

Until 9 March 2013

Thank you to everyone who celebrated the opening of Wind Blowing on the Cape Flats with us earlier this month. It was a joy to have Peter Clarke himself in the gallery, telling of the South Africa in his work, and he kindly allowed us to film him introducing six works which we'll be publishing between now and the 9 March.

Our February talks programme continues its reflection on the politics of South Africa with writer and current director of English PEN, Gillian Slovo, a panel discussion about recent visual arts developments in South Africa including independent curator and art critic, Christine Eyene, and a lecture by Annie E. Coombes exploring women's art practice in South Africa as alternative political space.

Kim presents Africa and the West: a Contested Conversation in Modern and Contemporary Ceramics and Karinna Gulias explores language and imagery in Avoiding an Epistemological Approach to Reading Poetry.

The next Research Network event is on 28 February.

Limited Edition Print - Peter Clarke

The new limited edition print to celebrate the Peter Clarke exhibition is now available to buy online and at Rivington Place and is proving very popular.

The print, a four-colour lithograph, is after an original hand-coloured linocut from the artist's personal collection. Homage to the poet Langston Hughes is a tribute to the American poet and social activist who was recognised for his contribution to the 'Harlem Renaissance' and was an important influence on the artist.

In partnership with Iniva, sixteen international art students from the University of East London´s Fine Art and Photography departments feature in an exhibition presenting a response to contemporary times at Rich Mix.

Artworks range from installations to performances, paintings to large scale photographs, which address a broad range of issues such as subcultures, architecture, abstract spaces, identity and isolation. The common ground is that they all explore the unique position of the artist living in a thriving urban environment such as London.

Curated by Teresa Cisneros, Education Curator at Iniva, the works in the exhibition were selected by Rich Mix, Diversity Art Forum, Rahila Haque from Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, Iniva and the University of East London.
