Art News:

February 1, 2013

Big news in AFC world: We have a new name, new URL and new design. Welcome Art F City.

Benjamin Sutton over at ArtInfo already has a great write-up on the site's changes, but if you're wondering who's behind the design and tech, we have AFC's own Will Brand to thank. He is awesome.

In other news, Georg Baselitz said a bunch of offensive things this week in an interview, an architect has some dumb ideas for an "improved" Guggenheim, and fashion enthusiast Pelayo Diaz maintains the misguided position that a photo shoot in Berlin's Holocaust Memorial is a good way to look to the future.

I'll be discussing none of this tonight at The National Academy Museum. Join me in a discussion with Peter Plagens, David Brody, and David Cohen (moderator), about the following shows: Francis Alys at David Zwirner, Song Dong at Pace, Diana Cooper at Postmasters, and David Shrigley at Anton Kern.

Art F City Redesigns

It’s a big day for Art Fag City. Today, we launch our redesign, move to a new url, and change our name. From now on we’ll be going by Art F City. The reasons for this change are probably obvious: after seven years as Art Fag City, we’ve finally grown tired of having our emails automatically filtered into spam, living without a Facebook page that actually uses the blog’s name, and being referred to anonymously in the mainstream media as “an art blog” that did such and such. We’d like that to change.

Five False Facts From That Georg Baselitz Interview

Everyone’s up in arms about that Georg Baselitz interview in Der Spiegel where he reveals himself to be a woman-hater. In a separate interview last year, he made himself out to be just as crotchety an old man, dropping appalling epithets. This time around, he calls all women bad painters. Inexcusable.

Overall, the interview is pretty much a farce. It’s full of untruths, some seemingly fabricated out of thin air. Let’s go over a few of them.

Tracey Emin Will Bring Valentines to Times Square

Beginning this Friday, February 1st, Times Square will bask in a new type of radiant, neon glory. Tracey Emin, hot off the heels of her appointment as a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), will now bring digital versions of her “love neons” to Times Square throughout the entire month of February.

ADAA’s The Art Show 2013 Exhibitor List

This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Art Show, the quiet, but sophisticated upper east side fair hosted by the members-only Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA). This year’s fair will welcome 72 galleries inside the vaulted walls of the Park Avenue Armory, and it will take place from March 6 – 10, 2013.

Art Critical Review Panel Tonight

Critics often complain that we don’t talk about art enough. Tonight, I’ll joining David Cohen’s continued effort to change that, as we discuss Francis Alys: Reel-Unreel at David Zwirner, Song Dong at Pace Gallery, Diana Cooper: My Eye Travels at Postmasters, and David Shrigley at Anton Kern Gallery.

MoMA PS1 Offers a “Discount” on Admission

Every single day, Groupon and a slew of copycat companies post discounts on everything from doggy day care to mobile tanning parties. Now, Long Island City’s MoMA PS1 has joined the ranks of those peddling in low-priced commodities over on Amazon Local.

Still More Bad Decisions by Visitors to Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial

With a heavy heart, I would like to open the web traffic floodgates to the blog of fashion enthusiast Pelayo Diaz, who is quite possibly the shallowest person in the friggin’ universe.

Call for Submissions: Write for AFC!

Can’t sleep at night for all the burning ideas you have about art? Time to write a few of those words down.

Art Fag City is now accepting pitches in two areas: Art outside New York and Net art.

A Furniture Rundown With the Johnson Trading Gallery

I interview furniture dealer Paul Johnson about his designers, the trade, and his new space in a 1940′s cinema in Queens.
