'design for death'
designboom presents a design competition on the theme of death care.
we are engaging with creative talent around the world to stimulate critical thinking
and to create a dialogue where different ideas and perceptions can freely be exchanged.

philosophies and religious theories explain the inevitability and necessity of death
from different perspectives -- birth and death are two aspects of life.
international universities offer master programs that train students in the social analysis
of death, burial, funerary and cemetery archaeology; a recent yale course has examined
a number of issues that arise once we begin to reflect on our mortality;
academic design courses elaborate on rituals surrounding death and funerals
(e.g. the design academy of eindhoven).

what is the future of deathcare? how can design change the way we say goodbye?

we invite participants to examine the cultural aspects, to foster openness within
the established traditions/systems around death and dying: in such a discussion on what is appropriate
for the specific experiential context of the end of life, controversial topics might arise.

since life began, the encasement of mortal remains has taken on different shapes and sizes
in the various ages, reflecting the cultural and religious overtones of the times.
historically memorialization was limited to the elite and only practiced in the highest
societal classes, today it is considered a fundamental human right for all people.
as societies evolve, the customs and traditions surrounding funerals and memorialization
also change (e.g. there is an increased interest in environmentally-friendly funerals and burials).

designboom organizes a design competition in collaboration with the LIEN FOUNDATION,
a singapore philanthropic house and the national funeral directors association
(with the asian civilisations museum foundation ACM).

the call for entries for the DESIGN competition begins on wednesday, 6 february 2013.
we will launch a second competition which will focus on ARCHITECTURAL SPACES.
