Daniel Rode, “Untitled”
“Untitled,” a temporary intervention in the Townhouse Factory Space by Cairo-based artist Daniel Rode, is the culmination of a series of artistic investigations that span the past year and a half.
The aesthetics of error inform the central piece in the installation — a large-format printed banner with a pattern taken from Cairo’s abandoned billboards. When these billboards are not booked with advertisements and are left empty, the hidden interior structure of the neon light tubes becomes visible, creating large abstract patterns that shine across the darkened city. This structure is assembled by hand, leading to irregularities in the lighting pattern; and single tubes or groups of light elements are broken, creating dark gaps and holes.
Rode was intrigued both by the aesthetics of these patterns, and by these systematic irregularities and failures. A huge billboard is switched on, but does not fulfill its function as a carrier of information. This installation responds to these deeply compelling errors in visual communication.

Artist Talk – Resident Artists
Christopher Mahon and Bryony Dunne
Irish artists Bryony Dunne and Christopher Mahon have spent the last eight months living with the Gabaliya tribe in the mountains of South Sinai. What began as a short research trip in co-ordination with UNESCO to focus on the network of orchard gardens maintained by the Gabaliya became a much longer project as they determined to represent the gardeners’ exceptional story.
Bryony Dunne
I will discuss how my research work branched into an experimental film and photographic project. The film is now being edited in Cairo.
Living within the community for such a period of time gave me a privileged view of Bedouin life. That I was a foreigner living in Sinai at a time when travel to the region was regularly advised against made me determined to provide a truthful account of life within the suddenly notorious region, in opposition to general media coverage. The film and photographic project offers a unique account of the rich culture of an area too long neglected, focusing on the diverse ecology of Sinai’s mountain gardens which I approached with innocent, open-eyed wonder. The story that is uncovered is one of inestimable importance to Egypt and the wider region.
Bryony Dunne is a multi-disciplinary artist and photographer with background interests relating to cultural diversity and tradition. In 2012 she qualified with an MSc in UNESCO Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation focusing on the Bedouin high mountain gardens in South Sinai. She has worked on projects in Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East collaborating with local communities to produce art that highlights contemporary issues. Over the last four years she has participated in a number of group exhibitions, most recently at the International Conference on “Living with World Heritage in Africa’ in Johannesburg and is a regular contributor to Barehands; International journal of contemporary poetry and photography.
Christopher Mahon
Having arrived in Egypt to assist Bryony on her film it soon became apparent that the documentary was not the best form for me to negotiate the complex, multi-layered social structures I encountered in the mountains of Sinai.
After living in the mountains for a year the fluctuating dynamics of life appeared far too unstable to be fixed in straightforward descriptive/narrative terms. I have turned instead towards examining the processes by which myths – including anthropological fictions – are created and sustained.
The Bedouin tell stories about themselves to others; others tell stories about the Bedouin to themselves. Interrogating the intersection of these narratives, the interfaces where different stories elide, offers an opportunity to locate myself vis-à-vis the stories I want to tell.
Christopher Mahon is an independent artist. He studied fine art in Dublin and movement at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris after which he joined the Daghdha Dance Company in Limerick. In 2010 he took part in EVA International and contributed to the Shakespeare & Co. Literary festival in Paris. Most recently, large-scale documentation from his Mud Bodies performance work was exhibited as a part of the A Series of Navigations exhibition at The Model, Sligo.

Exhibition
“900 KM Nile City”
Panel Discussion: Monday, February 18, 6pm (location tba)
Curated by: Amr Abdel Kawi and Moataz Faissal Farid
Collaborators: Atelier Kempe Thill, baukuh and GRAU with Lola, Aymen Hashem-AHUD, Deerns Italia, Angelo Boris Boriolo, Stefano Graziani, Saverio Pesapane, Bas Princen, Giovanna Silva
The Nile City is a series of settlements located in the Nile Valley, a 900 km long stretch of land between Aswan and Cairo. It is an accident. There was never the will or the wish to create it; it just happened. The Nile City is a new city type that was formed simply by rapid population growth.
The Nile City is an unprecedented city. In imagining the future Nile City, we are operating in an intellectual vacuum. It is not understandable through the application of 19th- and 20th-century urban theory. Maybe this is because, according to strict Darwinian rules, the Nile City should be extinct given that it is not self-sustaining.
A project is necessary to imagine the future of the Nile City. And a project must be provided quickly, because in the Nile Valley there are too many people, too little water and arable land and even less time. At this point a certain naivety (and our proposals are undeniably naïve) is anyhow better than indifference. In the Nile Valley, the alternatives are not architecture or revolution, but action or exhaustion, design or extinction.
From February 17 to March 6, Townhouse presents 900 Km Nile City, a long-term research collaboration resulting in photographs, architectural models, publications and a film that propose various design solutions for the city. The 900 Km Nile City has been exhibited in European venues and published in the international architecture press. This is its first exhibition in Cairo.
Sponsors: Fondazione AMGA, Gestione Acqua S.p.A., Stimuleringsfonds voor Architectuur
Partners: 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, Assiut University, Berlage Institute, El Monshah Markaz, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cairo, Sohag Governorate, Istanbul Design Biennial

Feb 27, Library, 7 pm
Wednesday Wagbas
Come and support local artists at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27th, for Wednesday Wagbas! This time around we are serving Jambalaya and corn bread!
Townhouse is selecting two artists out of an open call to receive grants of 1,000 LE each for their projects. On February 27th, the selected grantees will present their winning proposals in Townhouse's library and get feedback and support from you, the audience. In addition to the artist presentations, audience members can enjoy delicious home made food served up by a special guest chef for a donation of 20 LE. These donations go directly back into the granting program, to support more artists’ projects throughout the year. The more people that attend the meal, the bigger the Wednesday Wagba grant will grow from month to month!
Wednesday Wagbas is a community supported micro-granting program that gives artists fast, easy and transparent support to develop new projects.

SAWA Photography workshop
with Mohamed El Sheami
Every day we are surrounded by declarations through all means and methods which are wide spread on the local level and internationally; and now that the global economy is in jeopardy a large number of people have shifted to producing their own product(s) and marketing them through their individual efforts; hence, photographing and depicting the product properly is of great importance. This workshop will focus on teaching participants how to photograph their products professionally and use these photographs as works of art in themselves.
Mohamed El Sheami (BA in Graphic Design and Advertising) participated in a number of solo and group exhibitions. He has also independantly experimented with photography.
El Sheami has led workshops on photography titled “portraits & light” in 2009 in Saad Zaghloul Center. He has also given workshops on photography in Sait Andrews Church in 2010 which focus on photography. As well as a workshop on photography titled “The Seven Skies” in the British Academy in 2010.
