 Visual Traditions, past and present

In a companion event to the Peter Clarke exhibition, independent curator and writer Christine Eyene, South African art historian and academic, Liese van der Watt, and Raimi Gbadamosi, artist, curator and visiting Professor at the University of Witwatersrand provide a context for Peter Clarke’s work and share their knowledge of recent visual arts developments in South Africa.

The panel will discuss Clarke's contemporaries as well as the shifts in the visual arts and gallery/museum world in South Africa during the sixty and more years of his career. The discussion will also reflect on the changes post-apartheid for artists and for the visual arts.

 Art & Activism in Contemporary South Africa

The conventional political terrain in South Africa appears to be stalling on delivering the fruits of a democratic process. However, a new space for effective political activism on the ground has been opened up by women makers and artists. This lecture by Annie E. Coombes, author and Professor of Material and Visual Culture at Birkbeck College, University of London, explores the effectiveness women's art practice in South Africa as alternative political space and argues that gender is a critical component in these art projects' success.
