March is Woman's History Month!

... so, we thought we would share a little bit about the history of Art Works Downtown, especially since it involves several inspirational women artists.

1325-1337 Fourth Street was built in 1878 as Marin's 1st Opera House, "Gordon’s Opera House". For years, our block on 4th Street between C and D was known as "The Gordon's Block".  By 1997 this historic building had been in decline for generations, but seeing its potential as a future art center, AWD Founder, Phyllis Thelen and several friends pooled their own funds to lease the building, simultaneously founding Art Works Downtown as a non-profit organization. 5 of the original studio artists, inluding Mrs. Thelen, still have studios at AWD:  Barbara Poole, Stephanie Jucker, Anne Langston, and Barbar a Andino-Stevenson.

When the entire building went up for sale in 1999, under the leadership of board member Max Thelen Jr., AWD struck an innovative bargain with the City of San Rafael and the Marin Community Foundation. MCF would make both an initial contribution and a long-term loan, and the City would provide substantial redevelopment credits. In return, AWD agreed to rent the building's 17 apartments at affordable rates to low-income tenants. - See more at: http://www.artworksdowntown.org/history/our-history#sthash.kg4zj37N.dpuf
