Collage Quilting for Kids & Teens Saturday, March 16, 2013: 10AM-4PM with Amy Ropple Recommended for ages 9-15
Learn how to create a work of art by sewing and quilting! Learn how to use templates and sew a simple background, add a fabric collage layer to the surface, then use stitching and quilting to finish and embellish the piece with yarn, beads, paint, and other fun stuff. You can use a provided pattern or come up with your own project idea. Either way, you will be creating an original work of art using several fun techniques!
Quilting Inspiration: From Inspiration to Realization Saturday, March 30, 2013, 10AM-4PM with Beatriz Grayson
Move beyond the grid and discover new means of expression using design elements and principles. This workshop will particularly interestr quilters who want to expand a theme into a series of quilts. In the process of extracting designs from a favorite photo or theme, the student will explore vertical, horizontal and square formats, learn to incorporate notions of foreground and background, develop interesting contour lines, and use different organizational modes.

Today (March 1) sees the next installment in our Study Pieces series in the Classroom Gallery. Every four to eight weeks, a new topic is introduced, including an informal exhibit of quilts and a quilt or textile history lesson. Themes for the remainder of the year include Lustrous Alternatives (to silk), the color yellow, and World War I quilts. Some of the Brown Bag lectures (first Thursdays at 11:30) will be about the current "Study Piece" exhibit.
From March 1-April 12, we offer Log Cabin Variations. Come see the myriad ways this old favorite block can perforrm in a quilt. On March 16, NEQM Collections Manager offers a gallery talk on log cabin variations, beginning at 10:30AM.
If you would like to volunteer to arrange a small exhibition on your favorite quilt history topic and offer a presentation on it, please contact Debbie Janes (phone 978-452-4207 ext.16) or email dsjanes@gmail.com).

Volunteer Luncheon: March 16: 11:30am MUSEUM VOLUNTEERING
|
Do you have a passion for fine contemporary, traditional and/or antique quilts? Interested in being part of a dynamic non-profit dedicated to inspiring and educating quilters and the broader community? Then come join us at the museum for a Volunteer Luncheon on Saturday, March 16 at 11:30AM (National Quilting Day) to meet other volunteers and learn how we can help you expand and share your knowledge and love of quilting.
We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and one or more may be a perfect fit for you. Are you a “people person"? Maybe you would enjoy becoming part of our docent program, giving tours and assisting visitors in our galleries on weekends. Or maybe you are a natural-born teacher who might enjoy sharing your sewing skills in a class for young people eager to learn how to sew and quilt. If working behind the scenes is more appealing to you, come help sew sleeves on collection quilts or assist with hanging an exhibition. We can always use help staffing our resource library or working on computers with our membership database. Some curatorial research projects can even be worked on from home. Training is always provided.
Join us on March 16 for our Volunteer Luncheon. For more information on volunteering, you can also email questions@nequiltmuseum.org or call Connie at 978-452-4207 ext.12.

The world of quilting has moved way beyond pretty patchwork bedcovers. Case in point: an exhibition of art quilts opening this Thursday, January 17th at the New England Quilt Museum. The Masters II exhibition is the follow-up to the original Masters exhibition of works by members of SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates), including a touring collection and a companion book by guest curator and SAQA Executive Director Martha Sielman (Storrs, CT). Like the first, this exhibition includes a companion book featuring several works by each of the artists represented in the touring exhibition. The book is for sale in the NEQM Store.
