EXPO CHICAGO ANNOUNCES SHAMIM M. MOMIN

AS CURATOR OF IN/SITU

IN/SITU, the Exposition’s Large-Scale and Site-Specific Program, Utilizes the Expansive Landscape of

Navy Pier’s Festival Hall Sept. 19 – 22

CHICAGO – EXPO CHICAGO, The International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, is proud to announce the 2013 IN/SITU curator, Shamim M. Momin, director, curator, and co-founder of LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division). A key component of the exposition’s innovative artistic programming, IN/SITU provides the opportunity for exhibitors to showcase large-scale installations, site-specific and performative works by select international artists. Situated throughout EXPO CHICAGO, IN/SITU provides a dynamic course that connects various points of interest in and around Navy Pier’s Festival Hall.

“We were very proud to have launched the inaugural IN/SITU program last year with the esteemed CalArts professor, art critic and co-curator of the upcoming Hammer Biennial, Michael Ned Holte," said Tony Karman, President/Director of EXPO CHICAGO. “We are honored to announce that this year’s curator, Shamim M. Momin, will work with our exhibitors and their artists to further the next edition of IN/SITU,” he added. “Her current work with LAND in Los Angeles, her previous role at the Whitney and her numerous other international projects and relationships will bring an important curatorial voice to the 2013 exposition.”

Shamim M. Momin is the director, curator, and co-founder of LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), a non-profit public art organization committed to curating site- and situation-specific contemporary art projects in Los Angeles and beyond.  LAND was founded in 2009 and has since presented more than 40 discreet exhibitions and programs with contemporary artists. Prior to founding LAND, Momin was Associate Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she co-curated both the 2004 and 2008 Whitney Biennial exhibitions, as well as solo exhibitions of Alex Bag (2009), Terence Koh (2007), Mark Grotjahn (2006), Raymond Pettibon (2005-06), and Banks Violette (2005). As Branch Director and Curator of the former Whitney Museum at Altria, she was responsible for organizing exhibitions and commissioning more than 50 new projects by emerging artists for both solo and thematic presentations.

“Following EXPO CHICAGO's incredibly successful first year, I’m looking forward to being a part of its sophomore effort, and hopefully building on the great presence it has already achieved. Being able to work with artists directly in a site-specific way at the Pier and Festival Hall provides both the opportunity to amplify and enhance the site and to support the mission of the fair in a unique way."

In addition to her Whitney exhibition catalogues, Momin has contributed to numerous other publications, including exhibition catalogues, artist monographs and art periodicals. She participates regularly on juries and panels in the U.S. and abroad and is a recent recipient of ArtTable’s New Leadership Award. Momin served as Adjunct Professor of Contemporary Art for Williams College for the 2007 and 2008 semesters in the New York program. Momin’s recent curatorial endeavors include Perpetual Conceptual: Echoes of Eugenia Butler (2012), an exhibition about Eugenia Butler Gallery as part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, and Nothing Beside Remains (2011-2012), a multi-site, multi-artist exhibition in Marfa, TX.  LAND recently published a monograph on artist Sarah Cain in which Momin contributed an essay on the artist’s work. Momin’s extensive accomplishments as a writer and curator will enhance the contemporary vision of EXPO CHICAGO 2013.

In its inaugural year, 2012, EXPO CHICAGO’s IN/SITU program benefited from twelve-foot aisles, an expansive show floor, and architect Jeanne Gang’s visitor friendly design. IN/SITU 2012 was organized by independent curator and critic Michael Ned Holte, and included artwork by Robert Barry, Fiona ConnorTheaster GatesTony FeherRoy McMakinJaume PlensaSarah RaraSteve Roden and Jennifer West.
