Family Fun Day at the County Museum

Family Fun Day activities focused on Serrano culture are scheduled at the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, March 9, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. All family fun activities, including take-home projects, are included with paid admission.

The Serrano people are people of the San Bernardino Valley, living and working and going to school just like their neighbors. But Serrano Indian culture goes back many generations to traditional times. During this event, visitors will explore Serrano material culture, make and play traditional games, and use authentic tools that the Serrano people used to make a living a long time ago.

“Our staff and volunteers have learned about the traditional life ways of the local Indian people from culture-bearers of the Serrano and other local clans,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education. “We offer our visitors an authentic look at traditional artifacts and activities while encouraging them to compare making a living today with living in inland southern California hundreds of years ago.”

Two scout workshops scheduled during the Family Fun Day will offer an in-depth look at our local Serrano Indian neighbors. Bear Cub Scouts can earn their Indian Life badge 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, while Boy Scouts can earn their Indian Lore badge 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Badge workshops require advance registration and a prepaid reservation fee. Parents are welcome to drop scouts at their paid workshop while enjoying the family fun activities with the rest of the family. Bear Cub Scouts may register as a troop or as individuals. A form can be found on the Museum website, http://www.sbcounty.gov/museum/discover/divisions/education/scout.htm.

For more information about the Serrano Culture Family Fun Day or the scout badge workshops, contact Jolene Redvale at (909) 307-2669 ext. 252.
