The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University will present its annual Studio Art Thesis Exhibition titled Enigma from April 11 to 27, 2013.

There will be an opening reception to meet the artists on Thursday, April 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free of charge and open to the public.

Enigma will feature works by 12 artists who are graduating from Pepperdine's Seaver College in April with B.A. degrees in studio art:

Mark Allen
Peter Chi
Jocelyn Davis
Brighton Demerest-Smith
Efrain Gonzalez
Sarah Goodman
Anna-Rebecca Johnson
Ashley Jolly
Michael Kahl
Priscilla Kwok
Candice Leanne Lin
Beatrix Way

The Studio Art Thesis Exhibition allows graduates from the studio art program to highlight their achievements. In Enigma, the works explore their creative imagination in various media ranging from painting and sculpture to mixed media assemblage and performance art.

"Three students will showcase sculptural pieces and nine students will exhibit two–dimensional work, such as drawings and paintings using watercolor, oils, or acrylic. One student will also present some graphic work, which she is self-publishing in books. These seniors came up with this year's theme of 'Enigma,'" said Gretchen Batcheller, Seaver College assistant professor of studio art.

Ty Pownall, also an assistant professor of studio art, added: "I'm thrilled to see what the seniors are creating for this year's thesis exhibition! Within the work of these 12 artists there is exciting variety, from designer body bags to abstract sculpture that blends the history of welded steel with surf culture. As a new faculty member in studio art, I'm so thankful I've had the chance to get to know these students and their art. They're a talented bunch and I can't wait for the art world to get to know them too."

The exhibition was organized by Batcheller and Pownall, in cooperation with Michael Zakian, director of the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art.

The museum, located on Pepperdine's main campus at 24255 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, CA, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed on Mondays and major holidays. There is no admission charge.
