Book Discussion
The Greater Journey by David McCullough
Friends of Art Program
Read the book and join the discussion! Anne Erickson, MMA docent, will lead the discussion show how the book ties in to the MMA’s art collection. The book is a fascinating read about Americans that migrated to Paris from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, including many artists. Free and open to the public.

85th Regional Exhibition: All-State Edition
The MMA’s juried Regional Exhibition holds a respected position within Michigan’s art tradition, representing the best in our artistic community. Registration is open to all Michigan artists 18 years and older. Artworks must be physically brought to the Museum Thursday, May 2 through Saturday, May 4 or shipped, pre-paid, to arrive by May 1. Digital entries are not accepted. Up to two artworks may be submitted for juror selection. Entry forms are available at the Museum and for download through at www.muskegonartmuseum.org. This year’s Regional Exhibition will run from May 23 through August 21. 
This year’s juror is Doug Stapleton, an artist, curator, and educator. He is an Assistant Curator of Art with the Illinois State Museum, Chicago Gallery and a former Artistic Associate with the Chicago based contemporary dance company The Seldoms. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Arts graduate program at Columbia College, Chicago and his art has been exhibited recently at the Chicago Cultural Center and at the Loyola University Museum of Art.

Salon Thursday
Coinciding with the first day of drop-off for the 85th Regional Exhibition, this is a must-go-to Salon. All area artists are invited to bring two works to display for the evening, which we will install on the Walker Gallery walls for all to see. Artists may then submit their work as Regional entries, or take their art home at the end of the evening. There is no fee for participating in the Salon. Salon Thursdays are free and open to the public, and all artists and art lovers are welcome. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by Ally for Contemporary Art Alcoa Foundation.

Brown Bag Films
Brown Bag Film admission is free. Bring your lunch and relax with complimentary coffee and cookies. Underwritten by the Alcoa Foundation/Howmet.

Edward Hopper 
(30 mins.) Narrated by Steve Martin, this documentary pays tribute to renowned American artist Edward Hopper. Hopper was gifted with an eye for evoking poetic beauty from modest subjects such as hotel rooms, gas stations, and busy restaurants, and is widely recognized for capturing aspects of American life that are simple, yet mysterious.

Burchfield’s Vision 
(60 mins.) Explore an exhibition about Charles Burchfield that was created by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and learn about his life and work through his journals and artwork.

American Girl® Doll Super Saturday 
Join the Muskegon Museum of Art and the Lakeshore Museum Center to learn about pioneer life on the prairie with fun activities at both museums! Super Saturday admission and all activities are free. Underwritten by MMA Education Partner: Alcoa Foundation/Howmet.
11:00 am – 2:00 pm Activity Stations
Participate in four activities, earning a stamp for each activity. You will then be eligible to enter a drawing to win a mini Kirsten American Girl® doll and additional American Girl doll DVDs and books. The winning entry will be drawn at 2:30 pm at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Activity stations will be open at both museums throughout the day.

Make & Take: Quilts not only kept pioneers warm; quilting also became an artistic outlet. Design and assemble your own paper quilt square.
Tours: Check out Answering the Horn by Winslow Homer, a favorite MMA painting that depicts life on the prairie.
10:00 am & 12:00 pm Film: Watch Prairie Friends: The Girls of Little House on the Prairie on the big screen in the MMA’s auditorium. Learn how the Ingalls sisters build friendships, experience kindness, and face challenges together on the prairie. (140 mins.)
Lakeshore Museum Center (430 West Clay)
Learn & Do: Learn about spinning, a pioneer pastime and survival must. Card wool, try your hand at a drop spindle, and watch a spinning wheel in action.
Games: Play fun pioneer games such as ball-in-cup, marbles, and pick-up sticks.
2:30 pm Drawing at the MMA 
See who wins the mini Kirsten American Girl® doll and additional American Girl doll DVDs and books. Must be present to win.

2nd Sundays, 2:00 pm
Cinema Sundays Film
Cinematic art classics are screened at the MMA on second Sundays of the month 2:00 pm in the MMA auditorium. Shows are presented by film scholar and educator E.J. Hamacher. Free for Muskegon Community College students (with school I.D.), with paid Museum admission, or MMA membership. Sponsored by Muskegon Community College.

The Land (Al-Ard)
Director Youssef Chahine, 1969, 130 mins. (Arabic with English subtitles)
Set in the 1930s, during King Fouad's reprisals against Egyptian nationalists, Chahine's epic drama is focused on a group of poor farmers who are being exploited by their corrupt mayor eager for his own advancement under the new monarchy. A stirring testament of resistance, human dignity, and its detractors, The Land is based on the famous novel by Abdel-Rahman al-Sharqawi, stars the great Mahmoud el-Meligi, and was recently voted the greatest Egyptian film ever made.

The Power of Words: an Exhibition for ArtPrize 2012
ArtPrize inspired Jane Ewing and five other calligraphers to embark on a collaborative effort to create a modern work of art using ancient techniques, tools, and materials. Quotations written by the calligraphers on vellum, using pigments and 23-karat gold, addressed how words affect life’s issues. Jane will discuss her craft and its history. Program starts at 10:30 am and is free and open to the public.

Celebrate the opening of this year’s Regional Exhibition. This juried show was the first regional art show established in Michigan and holds a respected position within the state’s art tradition, representing the best in our artistic community. This year, for the second year in a row, registration was extended beyond West Michigan to include entries from artists throughout the state. The juried show will feature works in a wide variety of media by amateur and professional artists and will fill two galleries through August 21, 2013. 
The 85th Regional Exhibition is sponsored by Shape Corporation and Contemporary Art Ally Alcoa Foundation. Awards are underwritten by the MMA Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and media sponsor is Mlive/Muskegon Chronicle.

HUGHIE LEE-SMITH: Meditations
This Museum-organized study exhibition presents a core group of paintings, drawings, and prints that have a strong affinity with two important paintings in the Museum’s collection by African-American artist Hughie Lee-Smith (1915–1999): Landscape #3 from 1941, and Après-Midi, dated 1987, from our new Centennial Collection. Hughie Lee-Smith: Meditations comprises more than 20 works from the 1930s to the 1960s lent by public and private Midwest collections. Hughie Lee-Smith: Meditations was organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art and is underwritten by the DTE Energy Foundation.

LAURIE KELLER, STORY TELLER: Illustrations for Snory Fellers
Nationally known illustrator/author and Muskegon native Laurie Keller shares her whimsical, wacky, and funny illustrations from her best-selling tales. The exhibition will give insight into the process of Keller’s zany books from beginning ideas and illustrations to final publication. Illustrations will be from many of her fan -avorite books Arnie the Donut, Grandpa Gazillion’s Number Yard, Do Unto Otters, The Scrambled States of America, and more.  Sponsored by the Folkert Family Foundation and Ally for Contemporary Art Alcoa Foundation. Additional support provided by the Muskegon Public Schools Education Fund.

85th REGIONAL EXHIBITION
The MMA continues to celebrate the work of Michigan artists with this large, juried selection of paintings, glass, sculpture, prints, photography, fiber art, ceramics, and more. The MMA show, which fills two galleries throughout the summer, is the state’s longest established regional art exhibition and for the second year, will be open to all artists residing in Michigan. Sponsored by Shape Corporation and Contemporary Art Ally Alcoa Foundation. Awards are underwritten by the MMA Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and media sponsor is Mlive/Muskegon Chronicle.

BLACK/WHITE: Works from the Permanent Collection
Black/White  highlights the possibilities artists can achieve with black and white, using it not just as color, but more importantly as light. The exhibition includes drawings and photography by West Michigan area artists, Chinese and Japanese prints, photographs by Ansel Adams, sculpture, and newly acquired works of glass.
