Debate: Dalro & Artists Estates vs Rising Value (Publishers, Art Auction Houses, Galleries - online and publishing)

The Great Debate: A debate is starting between Dalro, who represents it's artists' estates and royalty payments (generated by the artists' works being published in the media), and Strauss & Co, who is taking a bold stance against the principle of paying Dalro to basically popularize the artist's image in/on it's Auction catalogues. On the one hand, artists and artists' relatives ( as well as Dalro) can gain enormous sums from collecting royalties, however even Andy Worhol would possibly support Strauss & Co in terms of the fact that the easier publishing and promotion of the artist's image in the media would, in effect, heighten the value of the artist's work. Could it be simply put that Dalro and their represented artists' estates are penny-wise and dollar-blind? Then again it's good that artists' rights be promoted, but at the end of the day, the artist (or relatives) looses out on the estates' rising prices with art auction houses, galleries and publishing houses potentially not publishing their images in catalogues and online, due to payments to Dalro. Onmin oor kuns-outeursgeld : Beeld: Johan Myburg. Die kunsafslaer Strauss & Co. weier om outeursgeld te betaal vir die gebruik van kunswerke wat deur die organisasie vir dramatiese, artistieke en literêre regte (Dalro) geadministreer word. Source

Copyright row bubbles on: SA Art Times : Michael Coulson: While both main local auction houses continue to object to Dalro's efforts to collect royalties for reproductions of pictures in sales catalogues, those for the first two sales of the year, both in Cape Town, reflect different strategies. Strauss & Co defiantly puts an Irma Stern on the cover, but its MD, Stephan Welz, tells me that he does not intend to pay royalties for catalogue pics. "I don't see why sellers of art works should be disadvantaged in this way." The catalogue displays Dalro-stable artists as prominently as ever. Read more here

The South African Sale, including "A focus on William Kentridge"

Auction 20617
London, New Bond Street
20 Mar 2013, starting at 14:00 GMT.
Sessions
The South African Sale, including "A focus on William Kentridge", starting with lot 1.

Tretchi, Kentridge feature in Bonhams sale

By Michael Coulson: The original of the world's best-selling print is not the sort of picture that often comes up for sale, so it's not surprising that Bonhams has put Tretchikoff's Chinese Girl on the cover of the catalogue for its March 20 sale of SA art in London. But, at £300 000-£400 000, it's not the most expensive lot: it's topped by two Irma Sterns, Zanzibar Garden (estimate £600 000-£900 000, the back cover) and Congolese Beauty (£400 000-£600 000), a Pierneef view of Stellenbosch (£500 000-£700 000, the inside front cover) and Alexis Preller's Woman with a Lyre (£400 000-£600 000, the frontispiece). Design Indaba 2013: Where art, culture, science and technology collide South Africa's had no shortage of hard news to start the year with, but taking a break from it all

Daily Maverick: KATHY BERMAN found her way into the Design Indaba - and concluded that design really could change the lives of all South Africans, if we're only open to the possibilities. The Design Indaba 2013 is now in its 18th year.Source

Source

Great works of art are being left to disintegrate, campaign group claims

Telegraph.co.uk Some of Britain's greatest murals are being allowed to disintegrate - wiping out a period of the country's art history, it is claimed. Telegraph UK, By Hayley Dixon While some of the pieces which adorn the walls of schools, houses and iconic buildings have been reduced to rubble in the course redevelopment others have simply faded. The Twentieth Century Society has launched a campaign to save artwork from the post-war building boom, claiming it has become an "endangered species". Source

Nude Sculptures
Huffington Post: By Ron Mueck Bring Hyperrealism To A Whole Other Level Looks can be deceiving when it comes to Australian-born artist Ron Mueck. Working in the realm of hyperrealism, he creates jaw-dropping installations that at first glance appear to be comprised of actual human beings, stripped down to their birthday suits in the middle of a gallery. But closer inspection reveals how the artist plays with scale in his life-like nudes, creating larger-than-life (or smaller versions) of frail human subjects with spider veins, fat, and tangled hair. BUSINESS ART

While the rich get richer... As the top galleries branch out, the middle tier is being squeezed
theartnewspaper: By Charlotte Burns. While there has been considerable growth at both the top and emerging ends of the trade, the middle has stagnated. Mega-galleries including Gagosian, David Zwirner, Pace and Hauser & Wirth have all expanded internationally, but mid-level galleries including Hotel, Agnew's, Haunch of Venison and Saamlung have recently closed, and there are fears that more will follow. Can $75,000 make you a high-flier? A prestigious new course promises to teach graduates the skills needed in the art trade-but it's not cheap

theartnewspaper: By Bendor Grosvenor. Published online: 28 February 2013. I recently learned of two new and "unique" educational courses, which, by coincidence, both cost around $75,000. One, at Goodwood in the south of England, will teach you to fly a Spitfire. The other, in Los Angeles and run by Sotheby's Institute of Art, will help you get a job in the art world. Or so it claims.Source

Chicago dealer buys second space-in cash, Kavi Gupta is expanding into a new building making it the largest commercial gallery in the city

By Charlotte Burns. Chicago gallerist Kavi Gupta has bought, and paid for in cash, a second gallery space in the city. The 8,000 sq. ft gallery will open later this year with a show of new works by recent recruit Roxy Paine. "The gallery has been doing incredibly well and we're at a point when we could finance it on our own-we didn't need any banks. It's kind of scary," Gupta says. Source
